I don’t understand why more countries don’t operate nuclear submarines. Ok, so the technology is tricky and expensive but is surely not beyond the resources and ingenuity of Italy or Germany.
With in 30 years technology will have made the oceans completely transparent. Until this happen, under water carriers commanding 100s of submarine drones loaded to the teeth is the most sensible option. Subs take Decades drones can be updated every year as technology advances. The drones can be controlled by carrier commands hiding in deep-sea bunkers in strategic locations in areas of concern.
[Swedish Submarine] Gotland managed to penetrate the defensive measures of US Carrier Strike Group 7 undetected and snap several pictures of USS Ronald Reagan, effectively “sinking” the aircraft carrier. The exercise was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the US Fleet against modern diesel-electric submarines, which some have noted as severely lacking. In 2001, during the exercise JTFEX 01-2 in the Caribbean Sea, the German U24 of the conventional 206 diesel-electric class “sank” the carrier Enterprise by firing flares and taking a photograph through its periscope.
Fun fact: out of the 4 biggest exporters of submarines worldwide, 3 come from the EU. France, Sweden and Germany, the biggest exporter of submarines total. Russia is also part of the top 4 (don’t know which place)
