  1. If you’ve heard it’s lovely in Birmingham you’ve been lied to…

But in all seriousness the region is quite nice with lots of picturesque landscapes and historic towns which can be beautiful (E.g. Stratford Upon Avon) but Birmingham is a massive city with a lot of issues. I’m from the East Midlands and visit Birmingham loads, there is a lot to do there however there is also a lot of poverty (Birmingham is the 7th most deprived local authority in England) but as with all cities it varies massively by region.

  2. If you avoid the urban sprawl of the West Midlands metropolitan area (Birmingham etc) it’s actually really pretty. Herefordshire, Worcestershire, and Shropshire in particular.

  3. It’s a big area with some lovely areas, nice country towns and some big cities, industrial and post industrial landscapes.

It’s quite possible your relatives are in a really nice place.

  4. fuck that. go to the isle of man or the shetlands

  5. Id sooner go for a swim at the sewage works than go to Birmingham.

  6. Birmingham has been taken over by foreigners so is now a dangerous shitthole.

  7. The truth is that any region of England has bits viewed as stereotypically “nice” and “horrible” – wealthy areas, impoverished areas, urban areas, rural areas, pretty rural villages, urban concrete etc. The “West Midlands” is an area which comprises nearly 6 million people and six counties, and so is hugely varied area – it entirely depends on where exactly they live.

With that said, the West Midlands has perhaps the worst reputation of any region of England. This is largely due to the poor reputation of many areas of Birmingham – the largest city – and many of the surrounding towns. People tend to think of these areas when they think “West Midlands” and not the rural counties or market towns. Whether the poor reputation of these places is deserved or not is another matter.

  8. The issue with Birmingham is you will be driving through one of the nicest areas in the country, turn one road and it becomes exceptionally rough. Sutton Coldfield, Solihull & neighbouring areas such as Warwickshire, Stourbridge etc are exceptionally nice places to be and live in. Solihull & North Warwickshire are/were in the top 10 places to live in the country. The city centre can be hit or miss, but on the whole if you know where to go it’s a nice city. Avoid Stechford, Sparkbrook, Soho & Smethwick. But everywhere else you’ll be fine. Like every major city in Europe it has its bad parts and good parts.

  9. If you want to hear about Birmingham from brummies try asking in r/brum

  10. The west Midlands and Birmingham are hated on reddit, usually by people who have never been or there only experience was changing over trains at New Street.

Birmingham is a much nicer city than people give it credit for. It has its bad bits, as every city does. The city centre is vibrant and it’s very multicultural.

  11. Whilst I’m not from the West Midlands (I’m from the northern parts of Gloucestershire, but I do get Midlands news oddly)

he West Midlands is a region with a lot of variety, just to name a few:
You’ve got the mountains on the Herefordshire – Wales border
    The Severn Valley
The Urban areas of Birmingham ,Coventry and Stoke
The Cotswolds in Worcestershire,Warwickshire (and the Northern Fringes of Gloucestershire)
Quaint towns and villages along with medium sized settlements like Hereford,Worcester,Shrewsbury
    Malvern Hills

Overall, quite a varied area with a lot of beauty and history everywhere you look. Worth a visit to be honest, and don’t limit yourself to the West Midlands itself, there’s a lot of interesting places near the West Midlands border that are worth a visit as well
