NATO to accept Sweden, Finland very quickly if they decide to join alliance — Stoltenberg

  1. It would be bunkers to assume they would not join Norway/Denmark and NATO regardless of a signed treaty or not, if a large neighboring nation decided to escalate trouble.

  2. Stoltenberg doesn’t actually decide on that though. All member states must agree, all 30 of them.

Which is to say, that while this process should be painless in peacetime, it’s not a sure thing in period of ongoing or threatened hostilities.

  3. Finland won’t join, not now at least. It doesn’t make sense in the current political atmosphere of the country. The EU recovery package already made certain people angry about control by outside forces. I’m also absolutely certain the government wouldn’t be able to pass joining Nato even with majority in the parliament.

It’s probably better Finland stays independent. We will join Nato if they require our help in a war, and I would assume Nato would help us if we were to need help. Nato and Finland are close but we haven’t joined because of the long term line of playing between West and East while clearly favouring the West.

    And what about Ukraine???

  5. I think NATO is a great alliance. I’m Swedish and I wouldn’t want my country to join, though.

  6. Few years ago Former Finnish foreign minister said that Rasmussen, previous Secretary General of NATO, had said that it’d take 30 minutes.

  7. Ukraine was against NATO before “little green men” showed up from *unknown* nation that swayed public opinion

  8. My opinion on this as a Swedish citizen:

We should not join. Not because of Putin’s threats, but because it likely wouldn’t benefit us. I honestly don’t think Russia would pull the trigger on Sweden and Finland. From the perspective of Russia, I suspect that our nations can be seen as a dangerous uncertain element in the case of a war with NATO — in the event of such a conflict it is not unreasonable to think that Sweden and Finland would offer substantial help to NATO.

Perhaps this is why Putin made these threats? Not to keep us out but to push us in? To remove that uncertain element. Attacking Sweden and Finland as part of NATO is fair game, but if Sweden and Finland stays neutral there may be severe international repercussions should they attack. And what’s to stop Sweden from lending Gotland to NATO? That is a genuine question — I don’t know if we have anything in place to ensure that Gotland won’t be used by foreign powers in the event of a war.

It’s a complex situation, but I don’t think NATO membership offers us any more protection than we already have. Perhaps that is naïve of me to say, but luckily I’m not a politician!

  9. I think they should all join NATO, it would benefit them as well as the wider alliance without any major drawbacks. Relations with Russia are at an all time low and it would suit them to establish a mutual defense with western nations.
