Gaza ceasefire efforts: Hamas officials due in Cairo for truce talks • FRANCE 24 English

The Hamas delegation is in Cairo this Friday for talks uh with uh Egyptian officials on a ceasefire proposition the plan would see an end to the fighting in three stages and was recently put to both Hamas and the Islamic Jihad group for more on this we’re joined by our

Cairo correspondent Edward kuza Edward remind us what exactly is in this proposal and tell us about some potential sticking points yeah so indeed like did did you this week um reports came out that Egypt proposed a three-staged plan towards a permanent ceasefire had the plan would start with temporary ceasefires that are

Renewable and during which a could enter Gaza and um under which uh captiv of of Israel and and and Hamas would be would be swapped uh and that that temporary Seas fires would be renewable um uh several times leaning up to a permanent ceasefire on which Israel would withdraw

From the Gaza Strip uh all uh Israeli captives would be released and Gaza would be governed by an technocratic Palestinian government now there are a few sticky points there um first like Israel has has has said that it its aim of this war is to eradicate Hamas uh and

And Israeli officials have said that the war would still continue for months so that had that that is not an an permanent ceasefire while on the other hand Hamas officials has said that they are open to any proposals that include a permanent ceasefire Hamas says we are open for a permanent ceasefire but

Israel so far says like we uh we want to eradicate Hamas um so so that’s a problem there uh on the other hand the Egyptian proposal said like an um technocratic government would rule Hamas so that that that assumes that it would not be uh would rule the Gaza Strip so

That assumes it would not be Hamas well if Hamas would agree to relinquish power of the Gaza Strip that is an a difficult point and now today an Egyptian officials said like not all Palestinian factions have come together to form such a technocratic government but the Palestinian Authority who is in charge

Of the occupied West Bank and and and Hamas they have been talked for years about a Unity government that has been very difficult process so how a future Gaza would look like is still very um difficult to see and what about Egypt’s role in all this what’s at stake for

Cairo yeah so Egypt has a has a has a clear strong interest for ceasefire first of all Egypt is very wary of Israeli plans of expelling uh pushing forcing Palestinians out of the Gaza Strip into Sinai Israeli media Israeli officials have suggested that this would be a solution for them to just basically

Expel would basically come down to uh ethnically cleanse the Gaza Strip uh of Palestinians into Egypt that’s something Egypt really doesn’t want they are very afraid that that would cause instability in Egypt uh they’re very afraid that that this displ would be permanent so indeed uh Gaza would be emptied of

Palestinians and don’t want to cooperate with this uh so in in a way to prevent this from happening a ceasefire is needed another big interest for Egypt is the recent houthi attacks we have seen in the last weeks the the the houthi Rebels on Yemen attacking ships passing

Uh through the Red Sea towards or from the SE Canal uh has harmed traffic through the SE canal in Egypt ships have been routing not using the SE canal and the SE Canal is a very important source of foreign currency for Egypt so that has also harmed Egypt so Egypt has a

Clear interest to get to get a ceasefire done

Israel pounded south and central Gaza on Friday (December 28) as Egypt was to host a high-level Hamas delegation for talks to try and end the nearly 12-week war that has devastated the besieged Palestinian territory. FRANCE 24’s Eduard Cusin tells us more.

  1. There's no way a permanent ceasefire will be possible with hamas in power 'the day after'.

Hamas' response to this proposal was that they didnt think the leaders should be determind by external entities but by the Palestinian people 😂😂😂 yep after almost 20 years of dictatorship rule.

  2. Egypt has fought against Hamas so many years! They don’t want one ☝️ of them. They even closed all borders long time ago

  3. is good to remember that Egypt was in charge of Gaza until 1967 for all the people thinks that the Palestinians are requesting freedom from the last 75 years from Israel, well not, they were part of Egypt and they will be still if Syria did not start the 6 days war and , because of that war Egypt did lost the land. But also we can see here why Egypt does not want the Palestinian because it means problem, destabilizing, war. that is why Lebanon and Jordan does not want them either, same with Syria…… and any of the other Arab countries , including Qatar that only takes the ones with money, loads of money.

  4. Hamas has run out of currency. Israel will not settle for anything less than Hamas removed from authority in Gaza. Hamas would have been smarter to have had a small operation with a handfull of hostages

  5. Nortn korey can do good maneger for gaza let them to come in gaza they are very trusty county And good for israei And palystini
