Cancer: Almost three million tested in England

  1. Thankfully my mum was one of them and she hopes to be cancer free in 2024 as she is currently undergoing treatment with curative intent.

  2. My wife was picked up in this testing surge, different cancer to what they were originally looking for.

Every appointment has been at a busy clinic including weekends, in fact her final pre RT is today; staff have definitely been putting the hours in and making full use of the facilities.

  3. As society ages this will take up more and more of the NHS resources.

  4. > But cancer charities say other targets are being missed and many patients are waiting far too long for treatment.

So it’s great testing is increasing and it’s happening faster, but it feels somewhat bitter when you have to then wait over eight weeks to see an oncologist and then over 3 months to have a conversation about starting potential treatment. In both cases for my mum it was then too late for anything. So she got her results yes, but then was left to die. She had trusted the NHS and was happy to wait for her ‘turn’, what a mistake.

  5. We really should be testing for as much as we can as early as we can. Better outcomes and will save money.

This century is going to be absolutely huge for medicine thanks to technology advances (and adoption of current tech).

The one thing on that front that doesn’t have a positive outlook is that we are just bloody fat and getting fatter. If we were better at keeping fit our NHS strain would be much smaller.
