At around 10 o’clock in the morning of Sunday, October 11, 1931, İsmet Pasha and his companions arrived in Budapest. He was welcomed by the Hungarian Prime Minister Count Karolyi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs M. Walko, the Turkish embassy managers and government officials. The Turkish delegation proceeded amid the cheers of the people and settled in the Lona Palora Hotel. The Hungarian foreign minister hosted a lunch, and then the Turkish delegation attended the horse races and watched an opera in the evening.
The Hungarian press gave extensive coverage to this trip. Peşti Hirlap Newspaper expressed the opinion that this visit strengthened the close friendship between the two countries. Usjag Newspaper wrote that the visit of Turkish representatives to Pest was not only a courtesy visit, but also gained a feature of great political and economic importance.
Yunus Nadi, one of the chief writers of Cumhuriyet (an important Turkish newspaper), also wrote an article titled “First Impressions from Budapest” in his column. In this rather long article, information about the city of Budapest is first given. Then, an evaluation was made about the Hungarians being governed by the kingdom and the historical process. Yunus Nadi wrote that the Hungarians gained their independence with the First World War, but they came to peace with their hands and arms cut off and their bodies torn here and there. He said that although this peace brought independence, the real pain was that it shattered the unity of the Hungarians. While he wrote that Hungary experienced the injustice of peace in the best way and that it was possible to see this in the faces of the Hungarian people, he particularly emphasized that the grievance of the Hungarian people was great and deep. He also criticized the constant change of government of Hungary, one of the countries most affected by the world economic crisis, with the analogy of changing horses while crossing water. Yunus Nadi also met with the Hungarian heads of government and said that the astute Bethlen left and was replaced by the diligent and ingenious Karolyi, but the problems did not end and continued to remain, and this situation affected the morale of the Hungarian people, but he was sure that the Hungarian people would overcome this darkness with their strong and hard-working qualities.
The Turkish delegation left Budapest on the morning of Wednesday, October 14, 1931, and went to Merpar Ges, the largest and most modern animal breeding farm in Hungary and perhaps central Europe, on a 6-hour journey by train.
The Turkish delegation was sent off on Wednesday evening by a crowded protocol, including almost all Hungarian state officials.
