Give them a commission. £20k for every boat intercepted and returned to France with the motor sabotaged. This problem will soon go away once the solution is privatised and it can’t be held as a political football for the incumbent government. Letting them come here to be ‘processed’ should be considered a failure even if they are later deported. These boats must be turned back from British waters by making the conditions impassable to a small vessel. This can be easily achieved with no immediate risk to life unless they turn back. No other global power would stand for this.

These boat people are a distraction. Less than 50,000 a year try and get here, 0.07% of the population. Legal immigration is ten times higher and far higher since Brexit. Blaming minorities is very fascisty, blaming those with nothing is very Tory. Anyone who thinks these boat people are a problem in the scheme of things is being played, they aren’t getting any benefits. They aren’t taking school places. They aren’t registered with the NHS. They aren’t taking your job or reducing your income. They’ll do the jobs ordinary Britons think are beneath them and being driven people will probably be a success.

Recruiting Ex-Marines is a much more active tactic than paying RNLI & UKBF to scour the English Channel for boats to tow across to UK. Maybe they will find evidence of French authorities colluding with people smugglers.
Everyone in the refugee camps know who the smugglers are. How the French police cannot find them is a mystery.
The government aren’t stopping the problem because they’re going to ‘solve’ it at some future random date when they most want to maintain power over the banks.

If wages being too low is the problem, then perhaps they’d like to remind the health secretary who won’t raise doctors’ wages. Perhaps also the transport secretary who won’t help the train drivers get higher wages either.
As for taking jobs… I’m good at mine, so it won’t happen to me. My boss also pays everyone the same amount, so there’s no undercutting. In my experience, when someone comes over from, say, Poland, and gets a job, they do a damn fine good job of it, having possession of a work ethic and experience that you just don’t see among the British public.
But eh… that was brexit. Didn’t happen, did it? Just empty rhetoric designed to divide and destroy our country.
