Israel’s Supreme Court rejects key part of Netanyahu’s reforms | DW News

The Israeli Supreme Court has struck down a significant section of the government’s controversial judicial reforms prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushed through the changes that limited the powers of judges to overturn government decisions the plans were highly unpopular and prompted massive Nationwide protests last year let’s go straight to Jerusalem for

More from journalist Sami Sul people took to the streets for months against this reform how surprising was the Court’s decision well I think in the public in general uh people have not been focusing on these questions right now uh since the war has kind of like overtaken everything and

The focus has been of course on and what’s happening uh with the security and so forth but the the legal experts they knew that this would be coming and they expected this to to come now at this time and in fact they also saying that this is the outcome shows that the Supreme

Court listen to the public and the public also gave the Supreme Court the uh kind of confidence to face Netanyahu and yariv leine the Justice minister in their in their efforts to reform the uh the Jud in Israel that’s quite interesting um what about the political reaction today then well as expected the

Liud the the party in power in Israel they’re very upset they’re saying that this is something that cannot happen in the time of war and this should have been Unity uh the U the Minister of Justice himself leine attacked the Supreme Court again linking it to the war again saying

That this is not the time and on the other hand Benny guns who is now in the polls the most popular uh politician he’s saying that we should respect the Supreme Court and its decision but he also said that there are no winners and losers in kind of an attempt to show

Unity and to show that the important thing now is the war in Gaza are there really no winners and no losers what what’s it mean for Netanyahu and his government well this is a big blow to Netanyahu a big blow to his attempt for this judicial overall this attempt to

Weaken uh the the Justice in Israel and uh I mean on in the reality there’s not going to be any change uh because the basically the Supreme Court has said that netan can not make these changes and netan has vowed not to do these changes during the war so it’s kind of

Like freezing the existing situation but politically it’s yet another defeat to Nan but where does this leave his own corruption cases okay so his his trial is ongoing it has not ended H if there would have been an attempt to remove the Attorney General H so as to cancel his

Trial this is something that experts have been talking about that possibility that netan would try and do that well now the Supreme Court has made it very clear that there are limits and this would have been an unreasonable decision and that the uh government and the ministers they have to act in

Reasonability and if not the Supreme Court has its power to block them you from journalist Sami s thank you very much for chiming in they’re from Jerusalem well Israel’s military says the conflict with Hamas which many countries designate a terrorist organization will probably continue throughout 2024 prime minister Benjamin

Netanyahu has said Israel aims to control gaza’s border with Egypt at the same time tensions on its northern border with Lebanon AR Rising fueling fears of a second front opening DW correspondent Jan Philip Schultz is in Northern Israel close to the border with Lebanon we asked him how

Tense the situation is the situation here in the bja region is certainly very tense the hills that you can see behind me are already part of Lebanon and people here say that there are many fighters of the Iranian backed Hezbollah militia in those Hills and they also say

That the Rockets attacks are so close that you usually even hit uh you hear the hit before you hear any air raage alerts so yes a very tense situation here and uh you know since the beginning of the war there have been hostilities uh in the region but uh the fighting has

Certainly um increased in the past days here and a lot of people fear that it could further escalate prime minister Netanyahu also said that uh yeah Israel could take things in its own hands if there is not more International pressure on Lebanon and of course eyes of the whole International Community are on

This region because a lot of people fear that a wider escalation of the conflict could have its origion exactly here in the Border region Yan Philip Schultz on the Israeli Lebanese border

  1. In a time of War, the supreme court is giving judgement…Do they know that if this war is unsuccessful, there will be no more Israel. In effect, there will be no more supreme court..

  2. Surprise, surprise, the criminal who tried to make himself dictator and failed to protect his country did something illegal that exceeded his authority. Shocking.

  3. Xi Jin Ping style corruption characteristics! Pop singers in the celebrity industry are inherently time sensitive and have a high elimination rate! However, China's entertainment industry has undergone a corrupt transformation through xi jin ping! Eliminated elimination rate, popularity, and timeliness! Let former celebrities monopolize the industry without any time constraints! Crazy money grabbing!

  4. One of has-bara once wrote a comment that why satanyaho will be afraid on the izhellies they are already came from the western countries, he don't c@re of them

  5. @eminencerain848 Israel is not a state of US!it is in Europe? US is far away from Israel so the governments should have a different structure! Common senseIsrael is not a state of US!it is in Europe? US is far away from Israel so the governments should have a different structure! Common sense

  6. I'm aghast this is still an issue after all that's happened. Clearly, Netanyahu's judgement is not as good as he thinks it is.

  7. I know 😊 I'm aware of that, my point is, Israel is in different continent to US, so it's government should have a different government/ court structure to US! Common sense!

  8. "Are there really no winners or losers?" was the right question to ask. 🤔
Politics seems more like masters acting classes these days.

  9. Its just stupidity really to think you can eliminate Hamas, demilitarised Gaza, and deradicalise Gaza by military means. If anything its only strengthening hamas, more young people turning against Israel, and they try even harder to acquire more weapons. Peace can not to achieve wirh Natenyahu in power.

  10. It sounds like democracy survives in Israel after all
The question is if Netanyahu will flee to try and escape the corruption charges that he wanted to strip the courts of power to evade
