Zelensky pleads for “a strong and powerful Europe” that can defend itself autonomously. A wonderful new year speech! Ukraine will become a big engine for 🇪🇺 integration, and is in fact already speeding up the process. The road to a more federal Europe runs through Kyiv!

President Zelensky: Europe must be ready to be autonomous. This is not just about the US. Europe is a large bloc of 600 million people, capable of living autonomously and defending itself autonomously.
Man! Just give Zelenski the Nobel Peace Prize right now with this kind of thinking….Slava Ukraini!!
Europe needs Ukraine. And Ukraine needs Europe.
While I agree that we need a strong Europe that cooperates to defend itself, I really dont like the notion that means we should become “The United States of Europe”, like some cheap USA knockoff. European countries have very varying cultures and heritages and voluntary peaceful cooperation is the way forward. Not federalisation.
Who knew that Russia would actually be worse off in a multipolar world.
Very well thought-out speech by Zelensky. He and his team are really getting it.
Interesting that “A Federal Europe” and “more integration” was one of the things that brexiters ranted so often about as a reason to fear the EU as an institution. (Notable : The corpocrats behind brexit were especially afraid of the stricter banking- and tax rules in the EU that were about to be implemented from 2021 on. Check out the Anti Tax Avoidance Directive ADAT, in short, and all pieces suddenly come together)
The White House was also not exactly a fan of a mightier EU, be it more for the reasons of trade and the threat of the € to the hegemony of the petro-dollar.
The irony if a ‘more integrated Federal EU’ becomes an actual thing ? There’s no more UK as a member to foul-up the works (as they’ve attempted só many times). ‘Unforeseen consequences’.
And Ukraine as a large member? With its wealth in resources? Agricultural, minerals, oil, gas? My word! It would make the EU even móre of a power-house, especially if a largely integrated army will become a part of it. Tiny solace to the Brits and Yanks : English will probably become the ‘lingua Franca’ of that Federal EU’
Afa as helping Ukraine in this war, The UK hàs been very trustworthy afa military support for Ukraine goes. But politically more of a wild-card. The US was thought to be trustworthy, but its inner-turmoil currently makes it a very uncertain factor, so, yeah. Time for, among other things, an EU army, of which the subtle base was already laid down by Germany under Merkel (of all people), the Netherlands (and even Belgium) in the shape of very closely working together on defence. The Netherlands and Germany very regularly train together, especially afa training for armour and artillery goes.
The EU needs to pull together to stop the unlawful invasion ASAP, to make Russia pay reparations to Ukraine, and help repay the countries that gave Ukraine aid.
No thanks the last thing Europe needs is federalism what we need is going back to the early days of the EU and get ukraine into it. We do not need a European superstate run by crats that hate free speech and introduce ever more totalitarian laws. So far the EU has produced nothing but a steady European decline completely outperformed by the US and Asia, run by incompetents.
Zelensky’s message was clear – the US is falling down on the job. As a US citizen I am embarrassed by our country’s reluctance to support Ukraine 100% right NOW. My father-in-law was a POW of Nazi-Germany and I am at a loss of words as to how the US, the arsenal of defense, doesn’t provide what is needed. No men, just weapons. If you are a Republican (as I) and are in a state that has a rep that does not support Ukraine unconditionally, please call your representative and let them know.
So in response to the United States of America federation failing to act due to small internal blocs holding it back, we must turn Europe into a similar federation? No OP, I do not believe Zelensky meant that. Thank god that the Baltic states, the UK, Sweden did not have to ask permission from Merkel or get Orban on side in order to send military aid to Ukraine before the current conflict started. If you believe in big blocks like this you essentially agree to Putin’s fucked up “spheres of influence” ideology rather than believing that people should have the collective right to choose who their nation aligns with and looks to- *the very issue this conflict is being fought over*.
