Back to mixed messages from the Labour party again I take it. At least this time they have their chosen figurehead in charge instead of a rebel firebrand.

No he doesn’t. His best option is to stfu and not saying anything. Labour are doing (relatively) well in the polls for the first time in a long time and now these articles are popping up seemingly promoting self sabotage. Many people in these seats will naturally come back to Labour if Labour can just hold off from calling them racists or idiots or just otherwise treating them with contempt.
They were told. They wouldn’t listen. They won’t understand until they experience first hand. They’ll then vote for more of the same. They’ll experience more of the same. In a decade or so they’ll eventually learn. Maybe.
It’s an impossible situation trying to deal with people who can come out with “Brexit is the end of neoliberalism, now we can trade with the rest of the world as a free trading island nation”
…they hate free trade so much they voted for unrestricted free trade
Unfortunately they need to find this out for themselves. Starmer is wise not to preach. Perception might change as the cost of living continues to increase. But I expect many or most will still be too proud to admit how they’ve been hoodwinked by a Tory power grab and the narcissistic career ambitions of an entitled opportunistic Etonian.
They know what to say to those red wall voters to get their vote, that is all they care about. The EU provided so much funding for the red wall and other areas, funding the Tories won’t match and who will still be ignored, despite pledges to level up the area. Thatcher helped destroy many of these areas by not setting up new economies to replace dying industries, Cameron failed to deliver on his northern powerhouse; why would Johnson and his ilk be any different?
