The number of young Londoners being radicalised by extreme Right-wing material online and other terrorist ideology is “really on the rise”, Scotland Yard’s counter-terror chief has warned amid continuing fears about the risk of an attack in the capital.
Dominic Murphy said there had been a “startling” rise in the number of children in London becoming lured into terrorist activity with arrests now running at double the 20-year average.
>But he said that although Islamist terror remained the biggest overall danger, extreme Right-wing ideas were dominant among young people.
This is what happens when right-wing rhetorics go unchecked on social media. Extremism starts to seep through the cracks and some young people will see these views as the new normal.
Why is Islamist-related terror not considered to be far right wing too? Surely on the grounds of it assuming religious supremacy and intolerance, it neatly fits into the far right category?
We really, really need to somehow get a grip on how this stuff is spread on social media. When we talk about radicalisation it’s nearly always to do with Islamism, but it’s not limited to that at all.
Not really surprising given how far right stuff is designed to appeal to people with the emotional development of a 5 year old
It’s real. All my housemates younger siblings idolize people like Andrew Tate (even after his human trafficking charges) and think all their life problems are because of the “woke left” when they’ve never even gone outside their tiny village and have been living under tory rule for their entire life.
Only takes young people to watch a couple of videos on YT, the algorithm kicks in hard and suddenly their entire digital life is full of hard-right conspiracy theories and neo-fascist rhetoric…
This is what happens when you keep people poor and desperate. facusm sinks its teeth into them and promises hope and a better life.
Governments only have themselves to blame.
If islamism was dealt with effectively, and immigration from majority Islamic countries was curtailed effectively, then maybe extreme right wingers wouldn’t have as much to back their claims up with.
You don’t get extreme right wingers motivated to persecute Buddhists because they don’t hear about Buddhist radicals in the news all the time.
People want simple solutions to complex problems, and someone convenient to blame.
That’s what the far right offers.
It’s sad, I’m 21, grew up and continue to live in London. Feels like half my friends have gone down this right wing extremism / borderline racism route. It’s definitely real. Then again there’s the ‘roadmen’ groups who are essentially being praised by some for being dregs on society, I guess they are just reacting to this. But the whole thing sucks overall.
Of the 45k people on UK terror watchlists, 90% are Muslim.
Let’s keep deflecting and cause a stir about the “far right” though. Madness.
Actual Far Right or just something slightly to the right of communism? It’s difficult to keep up these days.
I have been warning about the dangers of American evangelicals for years. British kids are casualties of American culture wars.
There’s 100% a youtube/Tiktok to far right pattern and it’s not talked about enough.
I don’t understand why parents are letting their kids have unsupervised Internet access – I have 4 kids and my son tells me kids in his class have Snapchat and YouTube. He is 8.
Mine aren’t allowed it.
Being anti immigration does not make you far right
Many years of people crying about “the woke left”, while increasingly right wing policies are brought in, and now we have a whole generation of youths swallowing up utter degeneracy ultra conservative hateful hard right social ideologies.
Yet still people say “the left” is or was the problem.
It boggles the fucking mind.
Given that being far right has gone from ‘gassing jews’ and ‘invading Poland’ to saying you don’t like the new Doctor Who…I’m not surprised more children are supposedly ‘far right’ – it’d be practically impossible not to be given that label by some emotionally disturbed individual on social media.
That said, clearly the Met are being grown ups here – they’re not talking about the nonsense ITT about primary school teachers waffling about Andrew Tate or your petty personal political squabbles where you throw names at each other like ‘far right’ or fascist.
This is kids actually getting involved in actual far right extremism and the number of arrests for terrorist activity.
To the commenters….perhaps this isn’t about Andrew Tate or Jordan Peterson or other “far right” (sigh) figures. It’s more serious and could be a response to well-intentioned but failing policies
This is absolutely no suprise to me. Let’s face it, the standard of living has gone down a lot during the last decade and this fertile ground for extremism of all kinds (offering simple solutions to very complex problems). I don’t really post, comment or follow anything political outside of Reddit and yet on all the other platforms I’m constantly being bombarded with right wing stuff on suggested videos and my news feeds.
Well to be fair. My local school sent letters to parents advising that they will not be providing cat litter trays In class for students who identify as cats. (True story) and when if you oppose the idea someone can meow and sit in a cat litter tray In class your assumed you be far right then it doesn’t really come as much of a shock.
You either just stop oil or your a bigot far right Nazi so I mean is it really a bad thing hahaha
“Far Right” is just a bogeyman. “Oh the evil far right!”. I am much more concerned about islamic fundamentalism, personally. They are visible and make a point of trying to intimidate (mass prayers held in the streets, recent palestine protests etc).
I have yet to see any proper evidence of this from so-called “far right” groups.
You ocassionally get football hooligan types who come to London when rightfully upset about seeing anti-British thugs (who hold UK passports, sadly) throwing paint on Churchills statue or the Cenotaph. The whole “far right” thing is overblown and is used as a tool to shut down any civilised discussion over really sensitive issues such as immigration. It’s why we have totally out-of-control immigration in this country right now and a breakdown in social harmony.
Instead of just labelling everyone “far right” can we have an honest conversation about what is happening in the UK and whether mass immigration makes sense? Many, myself included, don’t think it does make sense – we are being fleeced and taken advantage of at every turn by people who are prepared to abuse our system.
I’d like to know what the offences are that people are being charged for as kids in the context of extreme right wing views.
Ofc Islamist terror remains the most dangerous because it is the most dangerous and violent.
I think the moderate left and media in general need to have a think about why so many young men and boys are attracted to messages and content that fills a vacuum.
Bored young kids with no prospects, hope and a constant black cloud hanging above them. No social support, not fitting the mould with how society is set up. Reality vs expectations through social media and other media. No surprise really. Look how Hitler operated in the 1920s. People lean towards fascism and right winged agenda when the above is true. The next decade or two are going to be a challenge social and politically. State intervention is needed and not in the form of policing and tightening the grip. Society needs more carrot.
You may not agree with me and you don’t have to, but I’m telling you now Islam is taking over the UK and it is a problem.
people need to realise that the majority of people are centrist, some are centre left, some centre right only the smallest minority are hard left or right but the more the establishment or any organisation tries to push to the left the more the pushback will be to the right and vice versa !
we have seen it in Italy and several other European countries time and again the vast majority of people do not like being pushed in any direction or ideology as much as that may irk some of you and if they are forced in a direction they will push back with equal force it’s as simple as that !
This is what you’re going to get unfortunately. Boys are being told that men are trash in films and TV and that they are part of a powerful patriarchy that is giving them everything while simultaneously being told that girls are amazing. And then they go to school and realise that everyone is just a normal mix of people.
That creates a disconnect but if you say anything you are literally a right wing, woman-hating bigot. So no-one says anything except for the worst people. If normal people can’t question the truth without being targeted then you’ll end up with dickheads like Tate talking bollocks to fill the void.
Its a reaction to the internet and social media. You have loud nutcase Americans spreading polarised ideology on both sides of the political spectrum. Influenceable people here will inevitably inherit their issues by osmosis.
London children interested fitness, building wealth and stable family and social structures- MUST BE THOSE EVIL NAZIS
But are we really surprised? The easiest thing is to brain wash people to protect what is perceived “as a way of life” or “their morals”- we sent thousands of men overseas 80 years ago for exactly this! Today, with people arriving in small boats etc and “given” a life as perceived at “another’s expense!”, fast moving media taken at face value to be the truth is about simplest form of motivation. I consider my politics to still be “old school” centre- but this rise of the Right is not lost on me given the continued decisions to put others before beleaguered people of our own country.
Unfortunately it’s an ideology that speaks to young men in a system that appears to have abandoned them. Every focus currently is on women, LGBT, black community and Middle Eastern people.
This country doesn’t care for men or their mental health, how many commit suicide every year and no one talks about it. I don’t like it too but the tates of the world are the only people talking to men and making them feel heard. It’s a failure of the system and is the world we live in.
Probably get downvoted but I see if all around, when your own country cares little for you, any love, no matter the intent, will appear a haven.
How many children have been blown up by ‘the far right’?
How many people have been hacked to death by ‘the far right’?
How many teachers have gone into hiding due to ‘the far right’?
How many mothers have had to give groveling apologies in a place of worship due to ‘the far right’?
This is awful. But will the causes be looked at and discussed honestly, or ignored?
It would be a lot easier to control the influence of far-right rhetoric if we hadn’t presented so many reasons for people to be angry. Our governments and corporations have fucked up so badly that nobody knows who or what to trust anymore.
Well if politicians and media continue to demonise masculinity, there will always be an equal and opposite reaction. One extreme will breed another.
Blaming Andrew Tate when there clearly is a larger societal problem not being addressed doesn’t help anyone. There is genuine lessons and morality within his content which appeals to people in this country as the youth need (any form) of guidance. I mean most of his teachings are in the Quran (are you going to say Islam is a big problem?)
To be clear I am far from an Andrew Tate fan, but when was the last time people even watched longer than a 20 second clip of Andrew Tate?
To blame only him and other ‘influencers’ (that you’re not even informed on) is just as much of a simplistic of an attitude as the people who see him as their saviour.
Is this the fun part where we all pretend to be surprised?
Mens issues being increasingly sidelined whilst women’s issues are taken, rightfully, seriously.
Institutions being found guilty of discrimination against men, especially straight white men
Discussion on race and migration being more or less disallowed by the accusations of racism
Look, the rise of Trump was the fault of the left sidelining and marginalising concerns of people, that may have started moderate, but ended up utterly radicalised. We’re going down the same track, and treating genders differently, the distaste for legitimate discussion on migration and many, many other issues are going to lead us down the same path.
Im too young to say whether or not it’s always been this way, but it feels highly unique how certain topics are so stoutly defended and detractors of said opinions vilified.
And that’s me, a leftie.
So who do the young men have to look up to in life in the west? To see examples of confident masculine thoughts and feelings. Even being told these feelings are wrong and shouldn’t be expressed. They’re very few examples of a man’s man about. Tate, terrorists etc are filling a void. With the testosterone coursing through their veins. They want to be bonding over man things. Making fire, chopping wood, being in nature, combat, pretty women, pretty men, learning how things work, building a home, over coming hardships by staying the course, honour, integrity. These things aren’t openly showen in western society anymore. The mainstream ‘content’ that is being pumped out from T.T, YT, FB to their phones is demeaning, damaging and creates a self hate that is capitalised on.
