I love solar, but solar in Europe really sucks from October to March.
But I’m surprised it was still so low in 2023.
We should really work on building some new reactors. The latest generation are pretty impressive designs.
Wind will overtake nuclear in 2024.
According to The National Grid Live (grid.iamkate.com), today’s UK electricity production is 31.4% from Gas, 29.3% from wind, 11.6% from Nuclear, 7.4% from biomass and 2.8% from hydroelectric.
13.6% of the UK’s electricity is produced abroad. The biggest provider being France at 7.5%.
Congratulations to Europe as a whole for reducing our reliance on fossil fuels for our electricity. From what I can find online, Sweden has the highest percentage, with 66% of electricity coming from renewables.
In Portugal we’ve achieved a new anual record of [61% of renewable energy ](https://www.ren.pt/en-gb/media/news/renewable-energy-production-sets-record-in-2023). Because of the growth in production of renewables and lower prices, LNG consumption has fallen 21% compared to last year, being the biggest reduction in energy production with 42%.
So, only 27% of energy comes from fossil fuels and we can comfortably ignore the fact that China and India are emitting way more pollution?
Well done Europe, let’s buy plenty of useless Made in China/India junk we actually don’t need at all! We are Eco-friendly now!
Electricity generation, although important, often softens reality. It’s good to show the entire energy mix.
Notably in the EU it’s 34.3% petroleum products, 17.3% renewable, and 12.8% nuclear, etc. So still a lot of work to be done.
i would like to see more geothermal. super nice to provide Power and Heat.
sadly drilling is expansive and risky.
Does anybody have an idea what “Other” could be? Oil?
More nuclear please
Great to see progress but it’s important to note that this is not the energy mix, but only the electricity mix. While electricity is getting more and more relevant (cars, heatpumps etc.) it is only a part of the overall energy mix.
