Where is my cut?
Is the check in the mail?
The court case was incognito
Incognito mode was never an anti-tracking feature in the first place.
Incognito only with name
Use Firefox good people!
Oh Yea! /s Now how much are the users gonna get? (/rhet.)
Data tax that helps fund a UBI, Im sick of only the lawyers getting paid for these violations of our 4th Amendment rights. ( our data is a legacy artifact of our internet use, it is an Effect of us navigating the web )
Google Settles $5 Billion Lawsuit for Tracking Users Searching For Porn Without Their Wives Knowing
Can’t wait to receive my share of the settlement: a coupon entitling me to a free download of the Google browser.
That’s why i have trust issues.
Be safe Be secure use Tor
And the settled amount is “incognito” and most likely a slap on wrist amount.
Sounds like a damned if you do and damned if you don’t thing to me.
Either Google continues its normal tracking practices even when users are trying to use Chrome’s incognito and this happens, or Google stops its normal tracking practices for users using Chrome’s incognito, which would get it called out for monopolistic practices since other browsers wouldn’t be able to do the same and get same treatment.
Nothing about Google changing its practices, so it really means nothing except payday for lawyers and cents for people who spend time worth far more just to get them.
Another $5 billion I didn’t get!
How do we sign up? I use incognito
Don’t do evil.
Google settled to avoid the news reaching mainstream. Disturbing when you consider what they were tracking (i.e. why the users were using incognito in the first place). This breach of trust should have better coverage, same with Apple tracking even with tracking disabled. The two main phone OS makers both have now been busted acting dishonestly with customers data, and both have got away with it essentially. When Huawei was suspected, remember no evidence was ever supplied, of breaching trust, countries ripped out their gear, yet here we are with concrete evidence, and nothing is done. No Congress hearings, no media coverage, just a slap on the wrist and told not to get caught again, this is Vatican level bullshit.
They re still in massive profit.
That’s a business expense.
Settlement. So no changes in the law and all they do is pay a fine and continue fucking around with near impunity.
Someone should be on criminal trial for that. Instead there’s an entire industry based around it.
Incognito mode, a great tool to bypass the youtube anti adblock practises Google set up. In case adblockers do not work anymore.
Maybe that’s why Google was gathering incognito data.
This lawsuit is absurd.
To clarify, the accusation is that Google collected *anonymous* data. It *does not* say that the data was associated with the user.
In other words, Google collected the analytics as if the user was an anonymous entity with no history or associated data. Incognito mode doesn’t prevent cookies, it just creates a sandbox that is separate from your normal browsing data and history and wipes it when you’re done. That’s precisely what happened in this case.
This is a case where the entire lawsuit hinges on a very stupid user claiming to be misled.
Google is a publicly traded company, any data that they collect about you will ultimately become available to investors…
Guess I’m getting google store credit then.
I mean, incognito never really claimed to not track user data, did it?
It even warns you that your ISP or employers can track you data.
Victim here, how do I redeem my 5 billion dollars? I can’t believe that Google tracked all the weird ass JAV websites that I visited
Good. They need to be taught a lesson about minding their own business and respecting our privacy. Who does google think they are.
Ok there is a payout, but who actually receives it then? Doesnt feel like any of us here will get anything.
Cost of business, I guess.
How did they find out this data was collected in the first place?
As if they’ve stopped.
Their money all came from intelligence and deep state.
Repeal the Patriot Act
Did Google say anything about stopping tracking after the settlement?
Oh cool I look forward to a $3 Play store credit that expires in 2 weeks
Just don’t use chrome.
Firefox, and for shit like teams that barely works outside of chromium, use edge. Then close edge and halt all the processes.
What’s the point of having the option if it’s the same thing anyway lol?
The fact that we’ve gone from Windows being something you buy, install and then are in control of, to the EU forcing MS to extricate Internet Explorer and have open standards for Office… back to this is deplorable.
Everything should have a single ‘I do not wish to be tracked, anywhere, ever’ button on it that you press when you first get/go to whatever it is. That should be the end of it. No, ‘oh we added these extra fifteen options for you to opt out of’, no ‘analytics’ you absolutely cannot opt out of… none of it.

Sorry what? The worst I’ve seen was 1400+ but I can’t remember what site it was.
Here’s Windows: https://yt.artemislena.eu/watch?v=IT4vDfA_4NI – why is Windows… talking to Google, McAfee, ScorecardResearch… on a clean install, without opening a browser or *anything*. (Invidious link, no Google ads etc).
Oh don’t get me wrong I know some can be justified in terms of stopping malware and whatnot, but… give an inch and they’ll take 100 miles.
Linux… is not perfect but it’s better than this.
What takes the cake? You can’t even move the menubar to the sides in Windows 11 (without registry editing). I mean… come *on*.
Where is my money
Don’t use google if you don’t want to be tracked. Or Microsoft. Or Apple. They will track you and they will lie to you.
Am i dumb i always thought icognito mode was pretty much always explicitly stated as “doesnt use your saved profiles/data and doesnt show what sites you used browsing history” not “we dont track your activity on the back end”
The cost of doing “business”
