> The solicitor asked if she had looked in the van because if she had she would have seen empty cans of Druids Cider. “No. Mr McNamara was my main concern and getting him safely back to the station,” said Garda Norris.
I could actually imagine doing this if I had a crash 🤣
Edit: yas are misinterpreting it. Stop taking my fake internet points ya pricks lol
There are ways of checking if driver was drinking before or after the accident. I know that in some countries police would take multiple breath test over a period of time where they are able to calculate if person was drunk before or after the crash. Not sure how accurate it might be.
A recovering alcoholic that keeps a shoulder of vodka in his van just in case?
The 4 druids did their magic
I’ve seen this happen twice, guys walked away from crashed cars, guards arrived at the door and they said they had a brandy to settle the nerves. The guards didn’t even bother breathalysing them, no point, for this reason.
It’s a strategy that works unfortunately
So new tactic is leave empty cans in the car
If you crash when drunk, Garda arrive and just say you had a few to settle the nerves after the crash
If you guys read the article, you’d see it looks like he didn’t drink and drive tbf
Thats exactly why the guy that killed my father got off on a drink driving charge.
My dad told me this was a common trick in the 70s, along with stealing tax discs from accidents.
I guy I know I’d this too. Crashed, fled the scene, Gardaí arrived at the door about 10 minutes later and he told them he had a few gins because of the stress, his solicitor said to go with it. He still got banned from the road though so it didn’t work for him. He is a pathological liar too though so don’t know how much of his defence story was true though. He was a serial drink driver though because I was living with him at the time and used to drive home in some awful states despite me and others constantly calling him out for it any time we saw him do it. They guy is a fucking awful driver when sober so can only imagine how bad he was when drink driving. Not one for speeding, just oblivious to other roads users, half blind and ahs really bad reactions and ability. He really shouldn’t have been allowed back on the road at all.
Seems like an easy thing to fix: make it an offense to take an intoxicant after a road traffic accident until cleared by police.
> Ted McCarthy, solicitor for Mr McNamara…
I now know who to call when they catch me on that thing I did.
