Britain’s got some of Europe’s toughest surveillance laws. Now it wants more

  1. It is such an oxymoron to be a surveillance state with such crap policing

  2. I’m sure someone will post the inevitable “well if you have nothing to hide” argument. To which I quote from Edward Snowden (not that I agree with him on everything in this area) – “Arguing that you don’t care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don’t care about free speech because you have nothing to say.”

  3. “The bill ultimately said that the government can call for the implementation of this technology when it’s “technically feasible” and simultaneously preserves privacy. “ -in relation to what amounts to a “back door” for end to end encryption services.

This fundamentally isn’t how end to end encryption works. If it has a government accessible back door, it’s not end to end encrypted.

You can exclude the moral/ethical discussion here and see that the people pushing this through are not technically competent enough to understand basic encryption principles.

The law allegedly would also allow the government to bar companies from updating their software to close loopholes the government has discovered that it is using to presumably monitor criminals.

This has insanely high implications for people and could reasonably increase the risk of UK citizens being subject to cyber attacks if criminals are/were also aware of loopholes/errors in software that allows them to bypass security measures, but which have not been patched/fixed because the UK government is blocking it.

Given the UK governments prolific use of public messaging apps like WhatsApp it also puts the government at risk of cyber attack/espionage by state actors if they are in a position where they’re using messaging apps/communication services with known security risks that they’re barring from being fixed.

All this in the name of “child safety” or making it easier for the government to track down criminals. Make everyone less safe so police and other organisations have an easier time tracking criminals.

  4. I wonder if it’ll be able to dig up ‘lost’ WhatsApp messages 🤔

  5. The Home Office is mad that Meta is turning on E2EE for messenger and Apple for turning on iCloud encryption. I guess many stupid criminals get convicted due to messages on Facebook or not realising their IPhone backups could be easily accessed. Now the Police will have to go to a bit more effort to obtain these messages.

So they went to be able to block anything like this happening again and try and veto all security updates.

I think China also has a government department that veto’s all software and technology.

  6. It’s wierd. People pretend they don’t want more surveillance, but then boy measures like ULEZ which sees mass ANPR surveillance tracking your movements.

  7. The only deterrent is visible policing on the street. What use is a video to someone who’s stabbed to death? “Oh put your doughnut down office Nonce, there’s someone being raped. Try not to join in”. Then the video is no use afterwards due to insufficient weather conditions or lighting.

  8. Baffling how much surveillance we have and the police/authorities are so inept at using it to get convictions. I had a number of things stolen and when I contacted police I was told I had to locate and contact the people who had the CCTV and try and get the footage myself whilst also being told they could only give 20 minutes to investigate the crime committed against me. No wonder no one respects the law anymore.

  9. That’s because the government is an enemy of the people. By government I’m including all 3 establishment parties (con, lab, lib) who collude and basically all have the same policies. No matter who is in power, they do the same things which are always contrary to what the people vote for.

The politicians, big business, banks and mainstream media are a parasite army feasting on exploited and denigrated tax payers. Tax payers are increasingly becoming no better than serfs because, for example if they work a 5 day week, the earnings for up to 3 days out of the 5 go to feed the parasites. So they’re working like slaves.

Young people are locked out of property ownership so they’ll never develop their own independence wealth.

We’re being stripped of our civil liberties and are less free than we were 50 years ago. On top of that, they’re flooding the country with immigrants so diluting and manipulating our votes.

So they need mass surveillance because they know that the day will come when the people say ‘no more”
And we’re nearly there now. Just wait for the money printing to dry up and the free money stops. We’ve seen previews with rioting, property destruction and looting being triggered at the slightest hiccup.

Please prepare yourselves and your families.
