“Recognizing the broad consensus as expressed by 44 countries around the world on December 19, 2023, as well as the statement by the UN Security Council on December 1, 2023, condemning Houthi attacks against commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea, and in light of ongoing attacks, including a significant escalation over the past week targeting commercial vessels, with missiles, small boats, and attempted hijackings,”
“We hereby reiterate the following and warn the Houthis against further attacks:”
“Ongoing Houthi attacks in the Red Sea are illegal, unacceptable, and profoundly destabilizing. There is no lawful justification for intentionally targeting civilian shipping and naval vessels. Attacks on vessels, including commercial vessels, using unmanned aerial vehicles, small boats, and missiles, including the first use of anti-ship ballistic missiles against such vessels, are a direct threat to the freedom of navigation that serves as the bedrock of global trade in one of the world’s most critical waterways.”
“These attacks threaten innocent lives from all over the world and constitute a significant international problem that demands collective action. Nearly 15 percent of global seaborne trade passes through the Red Sea, including 8 percent of global grain trade, 12 percent of seaborne-traded oil and 8 percent of the world’s liquefied natural gas trade. International shipping companies continue to reroute their vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, adding significant cost and weeks of delay to the delivery of goods, and ultimately jeopardizing the movement of critical food, fuel, and humanitarian assistance throughout the world.”
“Let our message now be clear: we call for the immediate end of these illegal attacks and release of unlawfully detained vessels and crews. The Houthis will bear the responsibility of the consequences should they continue to threaten lives, the global economy, and free flow of commerce in the region’s critical waterways. We remain committed to the international rules-based order and are determined to hold malign actors accountable for unlawful seizures and attacks.”
vague statement.
Why not put the foot down?
Oh wow, a very stern warning.
It might as well read: “Please Stop doing this.”
Sounds weak
Check the Houthi official motto on their flag.
The final “ok, seriously, knock it the fuck off” before the first retaliation haymaker comes flying in.
If those Houthis could read, they’d be very upset.
I’m glad that there’s finally some sort of statement, but this does come off as a little weak. Biden wants to avoid getting roped into a regional war, but we have entered an era where tit for tat and passively defending against attacks just isn’t feasible in the same way as it was in the past when $2 million dollar missiles are being used to shoot down $2000 drones. What incentive do the Houthis have to stop when they’re winning these exchanges economically and actively want a regional war?
And I’m not blaming just the US here. Our partners, particularly our Arab partners, ought to take a hard look at the situation and decide whether they want Iran’s proxies to be able to act with relative impunity. We’re not doing the Saudis any favors in the long run by appeasing the Houthis and conditioning militant groups to think that they can hold the world economy hostage by firing at civilian vessels. All it leads to is further de-globalization and less global investment into trade with the Middle East, playing into Iran’s hands.
Do we really believe a diplomatic solution is possible with these types of groups? I’m all for a show of unity with 44 countries against this sort of thing, but at a certain point you’ve got to either retaliate militarily or issue clear and specific ultimatums that you will follow through on. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems to me like mere wishful thinking that the Houthis will be deterred by this.
This definitely gives the sense of a real and serious warning. Enough is enough.
They already warned them, the need to retaliate. Words aren’t going to stop this. A collective response would be nice. Hopefully they have just been wasting time building up that consensus military response
Christ, every week just feels like escalation into a conflict now.
I’m ordering extra toilet paper and tinned food.
Translation: “Don’t make me get proportional on your ass”
Let me translate, it’s over. One way or another.
So realistically, what kinda impact will this statement has on global affairs?
Can someone explain?
“Houthi rebels” sounds like a group of anthropomorphic characters in a Star Wars film
I hope whatever military counter another Houthi attack invites they call it Operation Blowfish
I got so many Houthi & The Blowfish merch & jokes ready
Not including the US, that’s a collection of militaries that you *really* don’t want to piss off
Combine *ALL OF THEM* and they’re not even half of the US’ military
Houthi and the rest of the desert bois are about to get **fucked**
Why not pressure Egypt into doing something? An Arab country… Who’s Bread and butter is the suez? Makes sense to me
Oh nice they’ll definitely stop now.
Surprised they didn’t add Saudi Arabia to this statement or maybe they refused again to stand as an ally publicly? Saudi is in a war with Houthis. Houthis keep firing rockets over their cities. They have been shooting down Houthi rockets targeted at Israel.
I wish they had used the word “proportional” somewhere in the statement. For the memes.
The key nation listed is Bahrain. They wouldn’t have issued a joint statement unless Saudi Arabia okayed them to.
The Saudis were hoping to stay out of this, since all their oil fields are within range of houthi missiles. If iran decides to keep escalating it is Saudi Arabia that has to deal with the fallout.
With Bahrain signing then that’s a message to Iran that they won’t ask the US to back down, and they will be ready if the houthis try to hit them.
Stop the fucking warnings and start the air strikes
No touch boat.
-USA
You don’t fuck with the US Navy, ask Somali pirates.
Oh look…another strongly worded statement.
This is what we call a cease and desist letter
“We are committed to an international, rules based order…. Except, of course, when that pertains to us or our allies. In that case, we’ll fund and enable coups, genocides, and war crimes”
And the French didn’t join that statement?

they know something we don’t.

(before you go into me as “French are cowards”, France refused to attack Iraq in 2002 because of a suspicion of WMD’s. France was right, there was no reason to go to war.)
It’s hard to believe that Houthi’s attacked merchant vessels…
But Wagner could have…
It’s Wagner, you dumbasses.
That’s great and all, but honestly, who believes they’ll give two shits about this? Strong words and countless articles about ‘slamming’ and ‘shutting down’ don’t do anything anymore, haven’t we learned this already?
Unfortunately, the only language they understand, and those like them, is force. Once they see the US or whoever is not fucking around will they either cut it out or sign their death warrant. In the meantime, they’ll keep pushing to see how much they can get away with and laugh when nothing comes of it.
*GOIN’ OUT TO SAVE THE MOTHERFUCKIN’ DAY YEAH*
Sooooo nothing doing eh?
Hovering dangerously close to the “find out” phase
