The ‘both sides are the same’ narrative is pretty prevalent and drives a ton of apathy. When people say that I just try to say that if nothing else at all, Labour being less openly corrupt than the Tories is a promotion.
It never helps that Starmer just isn’t an exciting or inspiring leader though even to Labour supporters, just saying be less apathetic isn’t going to work. Labour like the democrats in the States desperately need to work on their messaging, Biden’s objectively done a ton of good things for their country and is still being met with the same rhetoric.
I don’t see Starmer being able to shift disillusioned voters, they just see him as more of the same. There’s a significant amount of people who see Labour and the Tories as two cheeks of the same arse, and Keir Starmer isn’t anywhere remotely close to demonstrating that there’s any difference between what he’s offering and the status quo. Starmer can beg for disillusioned voters all he likes, but if he doesn’t demonstrate a willingness to actually change anything they’re not going to vote for him.
Then give them a ballot item to choose from. Values for SW1 do not guarantee a vote.
I wonder what could have contributed to such apathy!
How about you tells us what you plan to do to fix shit, you featureless smear of grey.
My mum has voted either Tory or UKIP in the last few elections despite being very poor and working class. Growing up we were never instilled with those ‘Tory’ values so it’s weird she’s ended up to be that way in her late 50s. When I tried to briefly discuss it with her over Christmas the only thing I could get out of her was that Keir ‘terrifies’ her. I’m really not sure what it is about the most boring politician in recent decades that could be ‘terrifying’. She insists it has nothing to do with her reading the Daily Mail though.
The voting system doesn’t help. Living in a Labour seat since records began, there is no chance any other party getting in – whether thats Tories, greens etc
Just doesnt encourage voting when you know your vote wont change anything
I hate the conservative party. They taint everything they touch, corrupt, self-serving, and incompetent, a very dangerous combination. However, I do not think Starmer and the current Labour party are the answer. We need leadership with vision and bravery. Someone to address the total feck up of the tories austerity and brexit (the list is pretty long). I think I will not vote Labour (for the first time in a general election). The cycle of conservative (mainly) then Labour governments is just perpetuating the downward spiral of the uk, where the rich get richer and the middle gets increasingly squeezed.
Well, lying about everything you said you stood for and offering nothing is a good way to make people disillusioned, Keir.
Absolute charlatan.
So he’s going to motivate voters by offering a bold vision on social equality, climate action, and arresting the decline in living standards right?
….right?….
Maybe if he actually gave people a reason to vote for labour other than, hey at least we’re not the torys. They’d have more of a chance of getting in.
Damn, the same guy who purged anyone with socialist values from the party in favour of mealy-mouthed centrists to appeal to an imagined undecided middle class is afraid that voters might be apathetic now? I wish someone could have seen this coming
Starmer is an empty suit carrying an empty briefcase but at least it’s mostly benign.
I just want to know who’s going to offer me the most and take away the least.
Starmer blames voters for his tepid character and inability to inspire people.
Yes we’ll vote for him but only because he’s marginally less appalling than this current gang of fucking bandits.
Its not up to us to support politicians/parties but for them to earn our support.
The problem with Starmer is he became leader of Labour promising center left policies and then abandoned them all to become Tory lite. It’s not really surprising people are apathetic. If he wants people to vote for him maybe he needs to offer people something new.
I’m kinda of reminded of the 2017 election where May and the Tories just relied on Corbyn’s unpopularity rather than offering policies and she lost her majority. Now Tories are massively self destructing but Labour may not win a particularly big majority if that’s their only strategy.
I want Labour to end up reliant on the Greens and the Lib Dems. I want the end of FPTP, and MMSTV. I want honest coalitions between parties rather than the dishonest coalitions inside parties. I want moderate Tories to have to face openly allying with the BNP, rather than just being taken over by them.
Yeah, the old “I quite liked Thatcher really” admission didn’t help the ‘both sides are the same’ sentiment. They’re surely different. Different cheeks on the same arsehole. It’s not the buttocks that are the problem, it’s the rotten stinky rectum.
Come out with some different policies than the Tories.
Introduce PR voting instead of FPTP.
I made a long list on another post about this somewhere else.
Offer change and hope for the UK population.
Just saying ‘we’re not the Tories’ is not enough as the right wing media can fill in the blank sheet of paper that Kier is currently handing them to say whatever they want.
Interesting. Looking the same as the Tories doesn’t really give people a reason to vote for.you.
Dont listen to a word that tri-lateral kid starver says. he has seized power of labour and fully tainted it while trying to justify why hes handing victory to the tories.
As a constituent of a strong labour seat, and a non-homeowning public sector worker, why should I vote for them?
He should stop being a Tory then. Simples.
Oh wait he can’t because there is not one Labour bone in his body.
Can’t do anything about housing when you’re a lap dog for landlords
Can’t do anything to save the NHS when US Pharma own you.
Can’t do anything about Education when you believe in the Blairite plan that set it all on the path to true ruin,
Good thing for us Starmer has come out with some really inspiring policies that he’s 100% behind rather than flip flopping as if he has no real convictions.
Dude is jumping as far right as he can to hoover up votes, and the only thing he offers me is that at least he’s not a Tory.
Sorry mate, you can’t just abandon your core supports and all they want so you can hoover up a few more moderates and then just say, well you have to vote for me anyway, so fuck your opinions.
Only way to stop him jumping further right is to make him lose votes on the left, or else we very well will end up with an actual two parties are the same issue.
Worried about apathy? Stop abandoning us.
He should step down and let someone who actually represents change take his place.
You know what could motivate apathetic voters? Having a policy that isn’t either “we will do Tory policy but better” or immediately shelved after 5 seconds
In response to the observation that his “we aren’t the tories” pitch is not particularly effective at getting people off their arses to vote, Starmer doubles down on not being the tories
Dont accuse me of being Apathetic when Labour have made it perfectly clear that people like me are no longer welcome in the party.
and yet apparantly we all need to band together to stop the Tories, where was this attitude during the last election?, Oh right yeah, you didnt like Corbyn so you opted to not vote for Labour, as is your choice, as it is my choice to vote or not vote for whomever i want
Get fucked.
No matter what govt comes in. The policies will not change. It will be different faces and same shite.
“Disillusionment could keep the Tories in power” warns man who has spent the past few years doing everything in his power to utterly alienate anyone left of the centre-right in a slavish attempt to butter up the gutter press.
My favourite part of this whole process is when some shadow minister has ventured some sort of vague, olive branch policy to appease the more left-leaning Labour voters, only to have it walked back by Labour spokespeople in a week or less for fear of riling up the Mail.
Then maybe Starmer needs to go out there and get people excited about a Labour government. So far I’ve not heard anything they plan on doing apart from ‘not being as bad as the tories’.
That is enough for me, however I’m not particularly thrilled either
Apathy isn’t the reason I won’t be voting for them. Ill be voting Green.
Labour don’t really offer anything I am interested in and a vote for labour is a vote for FPTP.
For fuck’s sake.
This isn’t a good political strategy, you have to give people something to vote FOR if you want them show up for you. Starmer won’t commit to fixing anything the tories broke and he wonders why people aren’t feeling energised?
