>The facts were noticed by a neighbour, who heard loud screams coming from the wellness centre. The emergency services rushed to the spot around 2.30pm. Initially, firefighters thought it was a car fire, but it gradually became clear that a tragedy had occurred.
​
>The car was in the garage, threatening to burn the rest of the house as well. The fire brigade quickly got the fire under control, but also found a badly injured woman. This was S.D. (43), the owner of the wellness centre. Initial determinations by the forensic lab and the law doctor show that S.D. died from multiple stabbings all over her body, not from the fire.
>
>Her husband M.D. (44) probably stabbed her, whereupon she still tried to flee with her car and D. allegedly set the car on fire. Emergency services still tried to reanimate her, but S.D. succumbed to her injuries on the spot.

>M.D. was arrested. It is not yet clear whether he was still in the house at the time of the fire, or arrested later. He is being questioned and an investigating judge is to decide on his further arrest, the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office confirmed. An autopsy will take place on Thursday.

>According to local residents, S.D. and M.D. formed a new composite family. She was from Avelgem and a policewoman in a previous life, he had a company in electrical works. They had three children together; M.D. had another son from a previous relationship. The family regularly went on holiday to Tenerife, where they had a flat.

>In 2021, S.D. started a wellness centre in the spacious family home on the corner of Zultseweg and Staf Stientjeslaan. The business became a success. Everything seemed to be going for the couple. Neighbours remember how they and their three children came to sing Epiphany at the door last year and at the same time did some advertising for their Steam-Wellness.

>During the event, the couple’s three children were present in the house. The emergency services had to break open the door to free them. They were taken to hospital for check-up but were not injured.
Femicide? Waar lees je dat? Voorzover ik weet is er nog geen enkele aanwijzing naar het motief van de dader.
