Why *not* cut the VAT on energy — at least for households?
Every stage of the production process is subject to taxation already and is reflected in costs to consumers (and businesses pay 4x that). It’s a moneymaker for sure, but I’m not certain that dropping a 5% tax on household end-users in the middle of an energy crisis and inflationary event is how even a dense doofus like BoJo wants to fill the coffers.
Or maybe he doesn’t mind pensioners and peasants freezing to death when they can no longer afford to run the heat?
Going after completely the wrong industry, we should be encouring UK gas production to cut our reliance on Russian gas (ideally we should be pushing for home nuclear and renewables but that takes time).
The hikes have come from relying on others for our energy needsleaving us open to the market
> Labour’s plans are unlikely to become policy in time for April, as it is not in power, but the party is..
The BBC really do assume the public are exceptionally dense.
with gretas blah blah blah on a loop ,blasted out of loud speakers !
The government needs to look at business energy too, all the focus is on domestic
People don’t realise the sheer number of small business that will have to close up shop, the business energy industry is entirely unregulated and many of my clients are closing their doors because the crisis is swallowing their profits
These aren’t your Amazon’s or your Asda’s these are the small businesses that already struggled to survive Covid now they are getting hit by another shitwave
