This rise in home-grown right wing extremism, including the causes of it, has been highlighted by the head of counter terrorism [as far back as 2019](https://amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/mar/20/newspapers-help-radicalise-far-right-uk-anti-terror-chief-neil-basu).
