Went to a viewing appointment and saw this warning in the building. Asked the landlord, he said it’s common to see this warning in Berlin. Is it true or is he lying? :/

You don’t need to be in Berlin for that. I lost a fairly good trekking bike in an apartment building in a small town because some absolute *idiot* propped the door to the bicycle room in the basement open with wooden wedges for their convenience.
People trying to steal things from unsecured rooms in big buildings isn’t rare, and neither is people entering apartment buildings by simply ringing somewhere until someone uses the buzzer.
Why would the landlord be lying? It’s a police warning.
Note that this isn’t about “home invasions” while you’re in your flat. It’s thieves stealing everything that’s not nailed down when no one notices.
Those burglars regularly switch the neighbourhoods they‘re robbing. By the time the (chronically understaffed) Berlin police hung this up, they had certainly already moved on. If not, they did after those were hung up. Why „work“ under increased pressure?
Warnings like that are not uncommon. If the neighbourhood seems nice and safe otherwise, I wouldn’t say no because of a warning like that.
People break into basements everywhere as long as it’s easy enough.
“Opportunity makes thieves”
Like the leaflet says, never store anything of value inside the cellar unless the cellar compartments are behind a properly locked second door. And even then I would be cautious.
Of course it doesn’t have to mean that this is generally a unsafe region. But those storage rooms, are the most easy target for stealing from buildings (lot of stuff and the most of the time no one is there). So to be aware of that probability and remind of easy ways to prevent crimes or make it more unlikely for criminals to pick this target, it’s not totally uncommon to put up instructions like this.
The landlord reacted to some break-ins in one or more of his properties or has heard of others that have.
He has put out this information to inform people on best practices to prevent that.
I wouldn’t hold that against him honestly.
In general, you need to expect crime to happen. Different environments have different crime.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see such notices in shady areas of a city. It looks like it’s some kind of prevention program by the police
You can find these warnings in nearly every building. It does not mean, you will be robbed. But As someone from Berlin i can tell you i wouldn’t be sure about that, does not matter where in Berlin you live 😂
