Emma Stone Recalls Exec Telling Her It’s a Sprint, Not a Marathon, for Women in Hollywood: “That Advice Is Total Garbage”

Relevant passage:
>“I was not always sure that that would be the case, because when I first moved to L.A., I went to one of those general meetings that they sometimes send you to. An executive told me that for male actors, it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and in his eyes, for women, it was a sprint, not a marathon.”
>“That was 20 years ago, and I realized that advice is total garbage because the majority of the women that I look up to in this industry, many of whom are in this room, have proven that as time goes on, life and work only get more interesting and more fulfilling,” Stone continued to a round of applause.
I have no idea what that means but it sounds sexist.
It’s insane for execs to say that like it’s out of their control.
She’s been fantastic on The Curse. The show wouldn’t work at all without the tension around what her character is thinking and feeling in any given scene, which is almost entirely conveyed by tiny little inflections and changes in expression rather than her actual words, since she’s such a phony. The same is largely true for the rest of the cast who are also great, but Emma is absolutely killing it.
Don’t like 2% of people make it in show biz. Wouldn’t that alone make it a marathon. You have to remain around long enough to get a shot. She did well for herself glad she made it
Translate: Women don’t have long careers in Hollywood.

No it’s not total garbage! Let’s take a look at two famous actors: Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster.
De Niro’s first starring role was in 1968, when he was 25.
Jodie Foster’s first starring role was in 1972, when she was 9.
In the last 10 years, Jodie Foster has only had 3 roles (plus one voice role). Her career has been over for more than a decade.
Despite De Niro starting 15 years later than Foster (and being geriatric), his career is still going strong – and lasted WAY longer. Women do not age as well as men, and Hollywood doesn’t give them roles after a certain age (unless they are superstars). It ***is*** a sprint for women.
EDIT: Yup, down-vote me, not because I’m wrong, but because you don’t like how reality works!
That’s survivor bias. The sample size and makeup she is using is not satisfactory to reject the null hypothesis presented by the exec who would have first hand experience in the matter.
After watching The Curse she’s become my favorite actress, she’s a real star
The HHH principle.
It’s also about the long game.
I wouldn’t criticize good advice, which is what that was
Survivor bias. She’s insufferable. She knows what he meant. Her acting has always been a bit mediocre too.
I want to see poor things. Looks so good. I love the idea of a woman immune to how the outside world sees her or the expectations they place on her in any time period.
I’m sorry but someone who lucked out and found success young cannot accurately make this comment on the industry.
This is like asking a high end executive at a hedge fund if work is a sprint or marathon. It’s asking the extremely tiny percent of actual successful people in the industry.
It’s a marathon with a ton of luck that you will ever make it to the finish line.
