  8. Edit: downvotes don’t make you right, keep your head buried in the sand and calling me a Russian shill all you want. I rooted for Ukraine from day 1 and still am, but that doesn’t mean I can’t see the objective truth that this isn’t going well currently

    The state department just came out and said we will not be continuing to support Ukraine at the level we did the past two years, and instead focus on helping them build their own military industrial base.

    The republicans are more reluctant to help Ukraine, but there is also a healthy dose of reality hitting the White House and democrats as well. It is unsustainable to continue supporting Ukraine at the level we did. Chiefly because we are running out of old equipment that we can afford (read, not financially but we need to keep our own reserves) to give away.

    There are also just realities of the situation that are impossible to control for. For example, their biggest need right now is artillery shells. The U.S. gave them the lions share of their regular artillery shells, a good chunk of modern guided shells, and even gave them most of our cluster shells. Now we are tapped out and need to produce more. Problem is, the U.S. military doctrine relies on air superiority and we don’t produce nearly as many artillery shells per year as we used to. Even with significant ramp ups, they are burning through what we give them at a rate that far exceeds what we can feasibly produce anytime soon.

    Further, the counteroffensive was an objective failure and in hindsight an embarrassing one for both Ukraine and her partners. Russia had months and months to dig defensive lines and set some of the largest and densest mine fields the world has ever seen. Then Ukraine is pushed to do combined arms tactics and blitz through these lines with western armor. I don’t care how good your armor is, that ain’t gonna work when you have to go through insanely dense minefields while pre-zeroed artillery rains down constantly on you with ATGMs and drones constantly a threat as well. The only way that works is with NATO air superiority and serious bombing campaigns, which Ukraine had no capacity to do.

    Realistically, Ukraine should have kept all that armor instead of squandering it in doomed offensives. They should have instead fought a war of attrition with superior armor, doing small strategic strikes to wear down Russian morale over the course of a much longer timespan. Perhaps while building up a more credible Air Force for a later, larger offensive.

    Unfortunately at this point I fear Ukraine is going to have to negotiate and likely give up some land in exchange for keeping western Ukraine free. No one wants to hear that but at this point it’s reality. The ship of a fully free Ukraine has sailed.
