So it’s not going to pop up in some sort of format you pay for?
It seems self-absorbed to make a video about why you aren’t making more videos. But he will have more time to absorb himself into himself.
This is honestly hardly surprising.
Factual shows on broadcast TV are usually commissioned with a number of episodes, with presenters and researchers etc hired for a known length of time and amount of content. As such they’ve always come with a known end point.
YouTube factual channels such as Tom’s were really the first to start producing high quality factual content but without a finite time horizon. At some point he was always going to run out of enough interesting topics to cover or need a hiatus like nearly every other show that’s ever been commissioned.
Well done to Tom Scott for a decade of quality YouTube content <3
One of the first “National Treasures” of the internet era, in my book.
Good luck to him. Looking forward to what he does next.
I thought he was still going to make videos, but on an
infrequent basis.
“I’m quitting!… but I’m not really as I’ll still upload occasionally. And don’t worry there’s my weekly podcast, that’s going nowhere. And my other two YouTube channels will be updated. But I’m quitting, yes.”
Edit: ”And don’t forget my newsletter!”
Genuinely never heard of him, am so disconnected from content creators and influencers
Oh no. Just at the same time Scott Thomas cancelled his series Things You’ll Never Find Out.
It’s the end of an era, but Tom will still be making content, and there are a lot of interesting YouTubers. I’m partial to Technology Connections and Mark Rober, myself
I think he was on his second or third lap or some of the more obscure elevators in Germany so, yeah, ciao. Celebrity WGAF Island beckons.
Since he announced this a while back I did wonder why he kept to releasing once a week, for an entire decade! I didn’t even know he released once a week until he said, I certainly didn’t see him in my feed once a week even though I’ve been watching his videos for years.
No wonder he’s had enough.
I loved his video about that Welsh mountain lake that acts as a massive battery. Water drains through the turbines to generate stored energy, then it’s pumped back up to reset.
How does it make profit? The electricity is sold to the grid during the day at peak demand prices, then the water gets pumped back up overnight when prices are cheaper.
Loads of fascinating videos like that, I should properly go through his archive some time.
Bet he will be picked up as a presenter for TV as he has good chops for it and is already familiar face to the younger audiences out there.
His comments on the threat of AI to creators that he made to the Guardian are something that I’ve seen increasingly echoed by other creators. It’s possible to take someone’s video, make an animated slideshow from the content add an AI voiceover and post it across multiple channels.
The original video starts to get drowned out from all the AI copies and the content creator sees substantial reductions in the revenue they make from each original video. Until YouTube starts to get more aggressive about protecting original content you’re going to see those creators under more financial pressure as a result.
Dreadful bloke, all sorts of stories about how aggressive he is IRL and to other youtubers trying to fair-use his content to highlight mistakes.

It has been 10 years though. It’s one of those jobs that you only get to see the 5 minute end results.
I mean, lots of people don’t like their jobs. His seems pretty ok as far as jobs go.
As far as I understand it “ends” is a bit dramatic. He says he’ll probably return in some way and he’s still got other channels and projects he’s working on. Putting it on hiatus is probably a better way of putting it
A hero of a British Youtuber. Comes, teaches, and then goes, all with any controversies. Take note KSI
But on the upside he said he’ll be making more technical difficulties!
I’ve met Tom Scott a few times, and he really is a quality human being and hope nothing but the best for him.
I’ve really enjoyed watching him over the years. My favourite is watching his journey of going grey and him steadily letting that grey hair grow wilder and wilder.
Huge loss to youtube.
Haven’t missed a single of his videos, even the clear filler 😂
Not sure what to watch instead now.
Good I’m sick of his crap clickbait videos being spammed all over the YouTube algorithm.
