Weather chaos: More than 1,000 UK homes flooded
Two out three PS of broke that the rain has stopped for now doesn’t help when the water’s already inside your home it wasn’t expecting it quite often they say that we’re going to flood and then I woke up this morning to this it was a bit of a shock for my sister-in-law now
You got to try and get the water out get a house dry and livable again well it’s just not nice is it it’s not a nice feeling so all what you’ve worked for could just be washed away so it’s not nice it was the early hours of this morning when this street filled
With water and then that water forced its way inside people’s homes and you know just look the sandbags that people have got in their doorways done very little to keep the water out in places it’s up to your thighs this area flooded back in 2007 so people here they know
What’s in store and that is mon of things being very difficult as they try to get their homes dry and put everything back in order some people left last night others stayed not wanting to leave behind pets but then this morning with the water in needed to
Move it’s been the same for many others in many parts of England this week it’s estimated more than a thousand properties have been flooded in Nottinghamshire where a major incident was declared earlier this week the river Trent is still so full warnings remain in place weather events once said to be
Exceptional according to Nick Green from the environment agency do seem to be happening much more often I can honestly say I’m into double digits the amount of big floods that we’ve had um climate change I don’t know but I think in terms of a a nation as in terms of a community
We need to get a grasp of what could we could be facing in the future um and is simply building big walls good enough to keep Community safe and protected going forward into the future there are questions too about the Here and Now with calls from some for the prime
Minister to go to the worst affected places why didn’t you visit them yesterday when you were so close by well actually I spoke to people in the East Midlands yesterday who had been affected and talking to them about how devastating the impact of flooding is just want people to be reassured that
The environment agency has got people on the ground in all the affected areas also more than uh more hundreds of of high volume pumps are in practice right now making a difference come down here and take a look take an invitation from Lorraine in Longford direct to the Prime
Minister today this area has flooded before but for years not like this and never as fast she told me as it happened this week take a look of what’s been building of why they keep building on flood planes flood planes are there for a reason they’re there to take water but
All they’ve done is they built built built built built this is why we’re in this situation now so it’d be lovely to actually get the government down here to come and have a little look after so much rain and storm after storm the river levels will stay high the risk of
Flooding will remain for the next few days putting homes and lives back in order will take much longer well even though a lot of work is being done to try and move the water that’s affecting areas like this one here over the last few hours the water level doesn’t actually seem to have
Dropped a great deal of toil and this isn’t a small area that’s affected this flood water stretches for as far as I can see and I don’t know if you can see those lights on a van down there that’s one of the frustrations of people here
That people do drive down it even though the road is closed and that sends waves through people’s homes who’ve got water in them one of the things Lorraine who you heard from in my report the woman who wanted the prime minister to come here said to me was that when the water
Came it actually came up it came up from the drains and that means there’s sewage in this water even once this water has gone people here have months of really difficult times ahead of them thanks CLA well earlier I spoke to Alex McDonald an environment agency flood risk adviser
For the East Midlands and I asked her why that region has also been so badly affected so we’ve seen an extremely wet winter um we had very big impact from storm babet in October with record breaking River levels in in darbishire in not Amire and since then the capts
Have been extremely wet so when they had the rainfall over the past few days there been nowhere for that water to go and again it’s broken River levels in the leera area and we’re seeing that impact through naum sure at the moment now are are these sorts of events
Becoming more common it does seem that way yes we we are seeming like we’re feeling the impacts of climate change in the East Midlands every winter it seems like we’re having a series of Storms and we’re having prophecies flooding storm B in October was extremely impactful with thousands of properties in the East
Midlands and we’re having numbers in the hundreds at the moment and still cleating them from Storm Hank so what what would it take just in the East Midlands to stop these sorts of um weather patterns from from flooding so many homes so we do have a program of
Investment um in the East Midlands working with partners and the local authorities however we’re seeing really high river levels um and we can’t just keep building walls and defenses ever higher so when we’re working with partners and communities we’re looking at what other measures we can do so trying to make communities more
Resilient through things like property flood resilience what what’s is property flood resilience so property flood resilience is ways that you can or things that you can do to your property such as installing flood doors changing your air bricks so that they close when flood water touches your property fruit
Of things like raising your electric water Pro plaster board I mean you know you said we couldn’t just keep building flood defenses um and I guess a lot of people will say well why not yeah I think when we’re looking at the river levels and the the climate change
Predictions the Ws would need to be really really high in some locations and those are in idyllic Villages like we’ve got in the Pete district and they’re the places that people want to go to in the summer when the water is low to enjoy that environment and building defenses
Through those types of uh places will completely complely changed the look and feel of character of those areas there was a National Audit office report at the end of last year which said that the environment agency had underspent on flood defenses what kind of impact does that have on protecting homes we really
Feel for people and we’d love to move faster when we’re looking at um a capital scheme and building flood defenses it cost millions of pounds and we do have to look at the economics of the situation and and deal with the the calculations and the business case rules
That we’ve got set you’re saying in some ways you don’t want to build more flood defenses you want to make homes more resilient but on the other hand you’re saying well the economics are challenging as well so do you need more money to spend on flood defenses or not
We need to look at how we can do things differently so we’re looking at significant investment into things like natural flood management um so working in those upper catchments trying to stop water at its source and slow the flow and rate of that into the water courses
And it’s a whole range of different things that we need to P together to help to make communities more resilient okay Alex McDonald thank you very much thank you
A cold weather alert is in force this weekend – with warnings that waterlogged roads could turn icy. According to the Environment agency – more than a thousand homes have been flooded after days of heavy rain.

By six o’clock there were 247 flood warnings across the UK with another 267 flood alerts. Surging waters in the River Avon, the Severn and the Trent caused widespread disruption – and water levels along the Thames are still rising. Many train services in the southwest of England have been cancelled or diverted.

I wonder which country will donate for this disaster first
Gov will tax you for stealing their rain water.
Well they said it come up from the sewers not from the river so there either a big blockage or you twats have link the sewage to the river if you have that isn't very good and i believe illegal.
All by design.
We have had constant non stop rain since November and still the government have not activated cobra what is steve barklay doing he made a mess of the nhs not the environment too call cobra bring together the logistics police fire millatary weather experts enviroment agency and sort it out i understand you cant stop rain but you can prepare for further storms which we will likely see
Every year I ask.. "What was done this year to dredge rivers to maybe increase their depth?" You can raise defences or you can deepen the river , no?
Cobra is there for energencies its gathering dust 😊
A bit of a smirk on her face?
When Channel 4 say 1000 UK homes flooded, is that 1000 homes from across the UK or 1000 homes in one flooded part of the UK?
Maybe if they stopped building on flood plains and stopped cutting trees down particulary in Wellingborough where I am. It might help.
Maybe because we build so many houses and buildings which covers the land so the water can't soak away.
I blame the Jet Stream, nothing to do with Global Warming…..
Traditional drainage systems, such as drains and sewers, are designed to manage water in urban areas. However, as cities expand, these systems might become overwhelmed, leading to increased flooding. Additionally, the alteration of natural landscapes during urbanization, such as covering green spaces with concrete, disrupts the natural flow of water and reduces the land's ability to absorb rainfall, contributing further to flood risks.
How many of the people in here complaining about building on flood plains are the same ones who say we need more houses.
The world today scares the c**p out of me. The PM's distinct apathy towards the environment never ceases to blow my mind.
The money and resources to help these people is being spent housing illgeal imigrants in their warm homes.
Had a family fit all these flood defence doors etc in the home and they do Jack S***. These people don’t have a clue
The solution to this problem is to build 3 storey high houses .
3rd floor you have your bedrooms,
2nd floor you have your living room kitchen etc.
1st/ground floor you have your garage for your boat. Problem solved.
Building on flood plains doesn’t help
How old are our drains? Most of them were built around the turn of the 20th Century and considering the rate of the changes in climate, they aren't up to date or man enough to deal with the levels of water now, the government should be renewing them all, or expanding them to deal with the rain fall we have now, we can't expect ancient drains to deal with the modern world, some houses aren't even covered by insurance because of the risk of flooding in the area so the government should cover their costs of damage!!
The Island is falling apart yet still the illegals are allowed to pour in. If you want to see your future its at the bottom of the sea.
Rishi didnt visit because Rishi doesnt care. Its obvious its climate change but Rishis and the Conservatives mates are big oil boys and Rishi has enough money to do one somewhere dry.
Hilarious that UK thinks too much building is happening when actually the UK is incredibly slow at building enough homes. That's why things are crowded, small, and overpriced.
You absolutely can build on flood plains, you just need to spend money and expertise on actually doing the engineering properly.
It's absolutely within the engineering and scientific potential of the human race to solve problems like this, we just haven't done it due to wrong incentives, incompetence, and a missing culture of achieving impressive engineering feats. Just ask any of the countries in the world that do build impressive engineering works. Look at man-made islands, reclaimed lands, putting people in space, etc.
A lot of places in Nottinghamshire the water is coming up through the grown floors of homes, the water table is that high, mainly caused by new build estates and inadequate drainage
Sheesh, you don't want Sunak there.
Theres too much water already, that drip would only make it worse!
This country is an absolute mess. It is so sad.
How do they not have rainboots
May Allah give you what you give others.
Make people give up their tarmac parking.
Research chemtrails and seeding. Weather deliberately created since at least the 60s. Nothing to do with climate change. Land is looked after properly. Rivers arent dredged anymore. Trees are being demolished for building houses. Council destroying trees which the land needs. Network rail have demolished loads of trees on banks by railways. Trees soak up water. Sadly this weather is deliberate. Its not climate change.
New job for Just Stop Oil, new title also , Just Stop Water .
Whats the big deal, that what happens when you build on a flood plain, thats why its called a flood plain, morons why are they talking about climate change
Depte environment spokes person delivers s master class in speaking without saying anything meaningful.
Dredge the rivers, not hard
God Bless🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 she surely needs it with these clowns at the helm 😐
El nino year always wetter natural cycle . But lets blame it on climate change bs. Climate has changed for 3.5 billion years will do always. 1970's they said we are entering an ice age by the 90's they decided no it's global warming. Now they cover all bases and whatever happens it's climate change. Half the world should be underwater already by the alarmist idiots claims that have been made in the past Al Gore for example. Just an excuse to blame you and me and tax everyone for their 'carbon footprint' . Want to make a difference plant a 🌴 tree.
It's not "climate change". There is a deeper agenda going on and you know it.
Hmmm, I wonder why we need so many new houses…
Building on flood plains.
Like building next to a volcano
Why is it nobody has a brain in government.
Rivers take water, that water drains off of the land. Therefore silt washes into the river. Silt settles to the river bed. Over time this raises the river bed. Result the river cannot contain large volumes of water like it used to.
Rivers used to be regularly dredged to stop this.
Enter the green people !!!!. You cannot do that you will destroy the habitat of fish etc.
So peoples homes flood.
Solution dredge the Rivers like they did back in our grandparents time. Mother nature has a habit of coming back time and time again.
So let's get sensible for once if that's at all possible!!!!. Dredge the Rivers and save peoples homes. Mother nature will do the rest and the green movement will be happy.
Infact everyone will be happy 😊.
where are you in UK,
Heritage Party We are now in our fourth year since we launched as a party in autumn 2020. This is a vital year for us as there is likely to be a General Election at the end of 2024. We will also be contending local elections in England and the London Assembly election next May.
In the UK, the old political parties continue to work in lockstep together to allow perverse materials into classrooms for Relationships and Sexuality Education, permit open borders with unprecedented levels of both illegal and legal immigration, and make war on motorists with increasingly onerous restrictions on travel for ordinary citizens such as LTNs, 15-minute cities and the ULEZ.
The Heritage Party is the only UK-wide party that will end the climate emergency hoax and lift all restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions. We will ensure that people can continue to buy and use petrol and diesel cars and keep gas boilers in their homes. We will repeal regulations that require homes to have SMART meters and meet impossible new building emissions criteria, designed to force the abandonment of older buildings that are a precious part of our heritage.
We will introduce a Child Protection Bill to protect children from propaganda that attempts to confuse them with gender ideology or groom them into early sexual activity. We will also control our borders by pushing illegal boats back across the Channel and introducing strict caps on student and work visas while ensuring we train enough young British people to do the jobs that need to be done in this country. I Edward say that if anyone votes Lib/Lab/ Con or any other left wing parties they need their head examined. Heritage could, with your help make Britain great again. Anyone who votes labour or tory or any other left wing party need their head examined
More houses being built ..less soakaway for rain doesnt help either
So sad. This is what happens when you no longer clean out the road gulleys or dredge rivers. Something which was carried out regularly a few years ago.
Who is going to pay to make the properties flood-resilient?
Dredge the rivers – maintain public drainage systems – plant trees/ greenery – & stop the building of toytown housing estates with tons of impermeable surfaces.
This is not global warming – it's the result of cutbacks, poor planning & council incompetence
If at all we are wise to realise what they have truly changed in us, we may have some hope of survival.
