So I bought this recently and it was fairly tasty. I googled what it is but I’d still like someone to help me understand what this is and is it a Finnish thing and how do people eat it/ pair it with.

  1. It’s cottage cheese (raejuusto), fat-free (rasvaton) and lactose-free (laktoositon).

You can pretty much pair it with anything. Some eat it plain or with yogurt, berries or jam, I’ve eaten it with oatmeal and as a side dish with meals. My favourite, though, is rye bread, Pirkka red pesto, cottage cheese and some oregano.

  2. Some gym people eat it as it is, because of the relatively high whey protein %.

More traditional use would be to eat as part of a salad.

Arla Keso, Swedish brand, is softer and creamier. A lot of people prefer it. Finnish raejuusto is often very dry.

  3. I eat it with canned tuna, red onions and sweet chili sauce 🤤 just mix everything up and spoon away 😊

  4. Combine it with either pineapple chunks and/or tuna steak or flakes in water, it’s amazing. Just drain everything thoroughly and use quality tuna. Tuna in oil is not a good match, I recommend Calvo brand tuna steaks in water. Makes for a very good snack on the go.

  5. There used to be a spicy version of Rae juusto that was in a red box but it’s not sold anymore I’m pretty sure. It was soooo tasty even just to eat straight from the box.

  6. But what it really is? As far from cheese you can go, you are.

  7. Also a popular garnish on mashed vegetable soup (vihannesosekeitto).

  8. My fav way to eat cottage cheese is with any combination of cucumbers, tomatoes and garbanzo beans. And olive oil and salt and pepper.

  9. Some avocado, tomato, cucumber, tuna and spices, it’s a nice salad. Also good with citron pepper and rye bread.

  10. Honestly I’ve seen people eat it with anything. It’s a very cheap and tasty source of protein so many people just put it on all kinds of stuff.

My girlfriend puts it on everything. Porridge, yogurt, soups, as a side, on bread.

Though. I think the regular kind tastes better. The fat free or low fat versions are healthier but you can’t beat the regular on the taste front. Just look for Raejuusto on any store. You’ll see plenty.
