    Look at all that ice .

  2. This is abnormal behavior, the animal appears underweight and lethargic, and the injury is severe.

    ~~They don’t usually go up rivers until spring~~ (wrong, my bad). Missing skin (and mucus layer) over such a big area means the fish will struggle to osmoregulate, and it also makes it very susceptible to infections. The damage could have been caused by skin parasites (e.g. salmon louse) or a microbial skin infection (e.g. Tenacibaculum or fungal infection), or it could be the result of a mechanical injury (scrape/abbrasion).

    It may have struggled with the injury for some time, resulting in weight loss and lethargy. If it doesn’t die of its own in the next few days it will likely get picked up by a bird or another predator.
