I’m not sure the children’s gender status is the key thing here though? It’s that they weren’t properly observed on a mental health ward.
Or have I misunderstood?
“(Charlie) was about to start on a medical pathway, but they couldn’t commence that due to his mental health,”
Being unable to start medical transition due to mental health problems is beyond nonsensical. HRT is the treatment for gender incongruence and it is known to improve mental health outcomes for trans people. This guy is now dead. Withholding healthcare clearly only deteriorated his mental health further still.
This story is just heart breaking to read. Gender services in the U.K. really need to think hard about how they function, there is blood on their hands here.
>”(Charlie) was about to start on a medical pathway, but they couldn’t commence that due to his mental health,” Sam said.
This is quite vague. Why did his mental health stop them from commencing treatment? Was it legal issues about consent, capacity etc, or other medical reasons? The article doesn’t really cover this, only that Charlie wasn’t checked on enough and the hospital wasn’t staffed properly.
Struggling to get my head around the logic.
Deny gender-affirming treatment to a trans person and **of course** their mental health is going to swan dive.
Big brain move.
It is slightly bizarre that some posters focus entirely on the trans aspect of one of these deaths, when the article is about three children with serious mental health issues and histories of self harm who managed to commit while supposedly under observation in a residential mental health unit.
The UK system of support and treatment for the mentally ill is completely inadequate and the deaths of these three kids is a glaring example.

How tragic.
