When Ukraine successfully launched its first strike with ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles in October 2023, targeting russian helicopters in Luhansk and Berdiansk, there were approximately 1,100 additional missiles in M39 and M39A1 modifications with cluster warhead in possession of the U.S. Army.
Now, in January 2024, several hundred ATACMS missiles are facing potential disposal as their expiry date draws closer, a process that comes at a “significant” expense to American taxpayers
or sending to Israel. There are several hospitals that need to be destroyed. /s
If true, it’s a disgrace. (and proof the US don’t really want Ukraine to win.
With “friends” like America, who needs enemies?
I say go ahead and scrap them, we have to be more budget conscious now that the enemies of Ukraine control the national budget.
Of course this will mean finding a contractor able to handle the scrapping services for the military. It is only right that this should be a competitive bidding process. I propose that the US military solicit bids from three disposal contractors: Budanov & Associates; Zaluzhnyi Industries; and Jagga-Jagga Arms Disposal “R” Us.
The scrap can be swiftly given over to whichever of these fine companies wins the bid, and who — despite having only just been created — are sure to see each and every ATACMS warhead exploded correctly in full accordance with the national security interests of the United States.
According to the US… this is fake news coming from Ukraine! They are NOT being scrapped!
It is the height of absurdity that every single one of these missiles isn’t in Ukraine already. Scrap them by launching them at every rail depot the Russians are using to supply their troops in Crimea and southern Ukraine.
“Q: There — there’s a Newsweek story out there that says that there is ATACMS up for destruction, the expired ATACMS, U.S. ATACMS, that would be a significant expense to American taxpayers, according to one former advisor to Ukraine’s commander. Is this true? Are there a bunch of ATACMS, expired ATACMS set to be destroyed? And if that is true, why would they not be going to Ukraine?
GEN. RYDER: Yeah, so I’ve seen those press reports. We looked into this and it is not true. Those reports are false.”
Why tf not send them to Ukraine when they are already written off?
This could be one of Russia’s fake news to weaken Americans’ determination to help Ukraine against Putin’s terrorism.
If we’re scrapping it, it’s because the shelf life of the components would likely expire prior to being fielded by a foreign country like Ukraine, especially with how transporting munitions into an active warzone requires time and planning. With that said, this is 100% false information.
US government is not very clever … like all other governments around the world
Makes sense to me. Send them now.
Absolutely ridiculous why is there any discussion on this send them to Ukraine they will dispose of them quickly and make a positive impact for the whole world
edit: the story is a rumor that is apparently completely unfounded. Can still contact to ask for a review of military inventory, and for items on the back end of the equipment’s life cycle be “sold” to “an ally or friend” where it might be useful.
While this story looks to be false, let’s pretend for a second that it is real. Think of all the drawbacks of sending expired missiles to Ukraine. Misfires may cause them to land on friendly territory. Unexploded cluster munitions may be spread all over Ukraine. The russians may be able to capture an intact unexploded missile (for whatever intelligence that could provide). The reputation of US/NATO made equipment is on the line, and if we start sending a bunch of subpar equipment over there, it may do more harm than good.
We have the ability to send them proper equipment, but half of Congress is on putin’s payroll. It’s sad.
We have literally thousands of Abrams and Bradleys rusting away which could be given to Ukraine, thousands of atacms which are obsolete now with our new prism missiles, etc. it’s becoming clear to me that the US leadership doesn’t actually want Ukraine to win this. If they used this whole thing as a way to lure in and weaken Russia in a proxy war, then ultimately abandon Ukraine, that strikes me as being pretty evil. Dropping support now is worse than if they had never helped and just let Ukraine lose quickly. Half measures don’t win wars.
I’m honestly ashamed of my government in this mess.
This is a no brainer! Just put them on a C-17 or C-5 and ship them
If there is a good chance of a higher dud rate, why gift the Russians anything to reverse engineer, or send to China for the same. Give them the good stuff, quickly too.
What kind of idiots do we have running this show? 🤣🤣
Russia will not stop at Ukraine as Hitler didn’t stop at Poland. If we let putin win, they will attempt to take over Europe. History is the guide to a dictators actions.
