How Airbnb is being supplanted by the twentieth-century relic known as the hotel is a good lesson in capitalism. In particular, it’s a reminder to ignore perennial promises that new market innovations will reform capitalism so that it works equally for corporations and everyone else.
ABnB is the perfect poster child for capitalism, as capitalism’s primary driver is greed. The definition of greed is: “An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth.” ABnB devolved into garbage, b/c 1. the hosts are so greedy and 2. investment corporations are now in on the game.
Additionally, short term rentals, along with house flipping, have both been suspected as major factors in the dramatic rise in housing costs. This includes those same owners manufacturing artificial shortages (zoning/starts restrictions). The later again is fueled by greed: “I don’t want more people to be housed in my area, b/c then I can charge more”.
Capitalism doesn’t need saving, it needs to die and be replaced with **systems** that favor and work for the greater good of society. People need to get away from the mindset that anything “not” capitalist is bad/evil.
