Since I seem to be shadowbanned from posting direct links to this subreddit, I have made this into a text post.

This is just tragic, and it’s a story we are hearing far too often. Exploited workers dying at or because of workplaces that don’t give a rat’s ass about safety.

What is also despicable is the amount of comments people were posting mocking this poor man’s death. I saw people I know commenting “-1”, acting thankful that there is one less black man in this country.

And people ask why people think of Maltese as racist and xenophobes when such a reaction is still commonplace.

Rest in Peace Ahmed

  1. So sad. Yet no one will be held accountable. In most western countries the fines are in the 100’s of thousands if someone dies due to a workplace accident and prison for some.

  2. Illegal immigrants do not belong in Malta. Period.

    This soft border policy that encourages men to abandon their families, their homes and their own countries to work here as virtual slaves at the profit of human traffickers and local construction companies is abhorrent. I’ve been sick of this shit for years.

  3. There are two issues to this story;

    1. The inappropriate H&S in the construction industry
    2. The fact that he was ‘unknown’ at the time of death.

    Re point 1 we are behind, far behind. Both locals and immigrants have suffered. Things need to change, though I am not expecting miracles. Much has been said and I don’t need to add more.

    Re point 2. Most complaints were made his being listed as Mr X. It has to be borne in mind that these people were not born with ‘european’ names. So very often they adopt a european name which would be the name most people will know them by and will make their moving around easier. However, family will still use their proper name, so when contacting police, ome person may give one name while others will give another and on the documents issued by the police/immigration, its anyone’s guess what name is given. Not to mention the fact that they might very well have a Facebook/socail media profile with a different name!! Furthermore, dates of birth, the year might be known but often little else so they are assumed. I had 3 work colleagues immigrants all born on the 1st of January!! This will confuse authorities, and people trying to work things out.

    Despite not even knowing his name, he got world class treatment in hospital whereas in other civilised and democratic countries they would not even look at his face.

    RIP Ahmed.

  4. Hapening for years, nothing changing and nothing will change. This people doesn’t care about “3rd WoRLd NaTiOnAlS”

    Malta is more 3rd world country than most of the ones considered as that I had been in.

  5. Somalian community are very tight knit in the UK. If they had contacted them here (or even in the UK Somalian community are that close!), or even publicised this man’s plight early, they would have known who he is and family could have been contacted.

    Truth is, they just didn’t give a shit about him.
