Japan earthquakes: What is the scale of the destruction? | DW News
Also in Japan prime minister fumio kashida says the country has reached a critical point as Rescuers are racing to find survivors of the powerful earthquake that struck on New Year’s Day and the dozens of aftershocks that followed the death toll now has risen to 64 people and there are fears that heavy
Rains predicted by forecasters could hamper the rescue work Quake triggered fires houses turned to Rubble roads destroyed the aftermath of Japan’s powerful New Year’s Day earthquake which with significant aftershocks forecast is still ongoing these dramatic satellite images show the devastation before and after the earthquake hit now as Rescuers search for survivors
Forecast landslides and heavy rain could hamper their efforts Japan’s prime minister under led the sense of urgency it’s been 40 hours since the earthquake it’s a Race Against Time to rescue victims and we are at a crucial stage he is doubling the number of military personnel and deploying more rescue dogs to
Assist thousands of those who have survived the Quake are now without electricity and water some have made their way to evacuation centers for shelter with stories of their ordeal my house is flattened you can’t enter it so I’m here with my wife sleeping together in a huddle while
Talking to others and encouraging each other that’s the situation now with scores of people dead and many feared trapped under collapsed housing this is a natural disaster that is still unfolding tww correspondent James Chader is following that story for us on Japan’s West Coast and he gave us this
Update well here in kazawa this is a city that’s a bit further south from the worst impacted um regions that were mentioned in that report there so in kazawa we’ve seen damage to roads we’ve seen some damage uh to housing but it’s really not on the scale that um it has
Um impacted those regions on the northern part of the Noto Peninsula so this is cities like weima and suu this is where the most urgent rescue operations are going to be ongoing this evening despite the worsening conditions but really across this region across this western part of Japan this feels
Like a region that’s on edge right from landing at the airport in KATU a little bit further south you saw really a continuous stream of Japanese self Defense Forces helicopters moving North to try and and continue those rescue efforts throughout the day moving around this region we’ve also heard consistent
Siren so the worst affected regions as I mentioned that northern part of Noto will continue to see rescue operations throughout the night but with you know the concerns that there will be more aftershocks in the coming days um the region really remains um concerned about what’s what lies ahead in addition to
Concerns of aftershocks what are the other main challenges that rescue teams are facing right now well the biggest challenge really is time we’re now past that 48 hour mark since the main earthquake struck this part of Japan and often people talk about this 48 hour window where the the
Likelihood of finding survivors trapped under Rubble is much higher we’ve now passed that this afternoon and then you throw on top of that these worsening conditions as I mentioned going into this evening the weather here is really cold you might be able to hear there’s rain behind me the rain we understand is
Even worse again in those worst affected regions and so the concern is really that um especially that there might be landslides this evening there were some experts saying that even a little bit of rain this evening could cause major landslides in that region and make already difficult rescue operations even
More challenging and what about the survivors of these earthquakes we know that initially some 100,000 people were told to evacuate their homes have at least some of them now been able to return home well we understand the majority of those 100,000 people that were initially evacuated have been able to leave
Evacuation centers that’s because they were initially evacuated because of tsunami warnings which are issued um in in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake um although those tsunami warnings have now been lifted the bigger question really is what homes are these people going to be able to return to um
We’ve heard reports from the mayor of suzu again in that northern part of Noto Peninsula saying that some 90% of homes in that City have been destroyed so again they have been able to leave these evacuation centers but the situation up there is really really challenging and
You know even the survivors are going to face a long road back to reality following this earthquake James thank you so much for your reporting that’s DW’s correspondent James Chader in kazawa
Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida says the country has reached a critical point – as rescuers race to find survivors of the powerful earthquake that struck on New Year’s Day and the dozens of aftershocks that followed. And there are fears that heavy rains predicted by forecasters could hamper the rescue work.

Tofu-dreg constructions. Slow response by the Nippon Govt, waited a full day before going in and still haven't reached most of the affected areas. The Epicenter wasn't even on land, it was off the coast of the tip of Noto Peninsula, 86km away from Toyoma, with an Intesity rating of 6, but it happened at 4PM in the afternoon when most people were out. It's funny how every Western media continue report on this earthquake in Japan, while they stopped reporting on the one in Gansu/Qinghai China after the 2nd day. Western media keep emphasizing on how Ishikawa endured 120+ aftershocks, but completely ignored the fact that Gansu went through a total of 434 aftersocks. China's earthquake happened at 12:07AM when most people were home sleeping; the Epicenter was directly below the two villages bordering Gansu & Qinghai with a Depth of 10km and 3km proximity from the Faultline that's why it was so devastating. Yet China's rescue efforts began as early as 1:18AM, their authorities put the lives of civilians as priority unlike Japan, and Western media didn't want the audience to see that.
There are many old buildings in this area.
Many buildings were built before the current earthquake resistance standards, and there were many buildings that were old.
It’s still amazing how Japan is able to drastically minimize the death toll to such degree. It truly shows how smart and prepared they are as a nation to counter these disasters.
Japan needs to ask the other countries to help
Japan has been building Tsunami walls along the western coastline spending billions for some time after 2011 though they’re such eyesores they at least protect residents from Tsunami. So these most likely to be hit regions are relatively safe from Tsunami because Tsunami is the most devastating than earthquake alone. Unfortunately this area hit is very rural. Some of these houses are very old and they’re traditional farm houses with heavy Japanese style roofs called Kawara. At 7.6 magnitude only modern homes and buildings built after 1984 can withstand such strong earthquakes.
You might find this incredibly disturbing, but as a home owner myself living in Japan, and as described by the following advisories via the internet;
If your own dwelling or its contents are damaged by fire, a typhoon, heavy rain or other natural disaster, you must bear repair and other costs associated with the damage.
Losses caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or tsunamis are not covered by homeowner (fire) insurance.
Fire insurance being the highest level of insurance cover obtainable from an insurance company.
Can you imagine how the victims of this earthquake must be feeling besides the freezing temperatures 😢

So sorry there are deaths, sending love and prayers to those affected. Stay safe beautiful Japanese people. 🇯🇵🏴❤️

So horrible 😢
I'm not a scientist or anything but got plenty of common sense! N I begin to wonder if the earthquake may have been accelerated by the constant dropping of bombs n various parts of the world the earths core has plates n shelves! One can't convince me the constant bombing dies not affect the core or plates,!
🤣🤣🤣🤣

Oh! My thoughts go out to Japanese people. Have visited Japan as an adult, beautiful, it breaks my heart as I was born there
Please God stop this earthquake and tsunami😢😢
Very difficult to have sympathy for a country that denies and ignores it's horrific treatment of the Chinese prior to WW2.
My heart goes out to the people of Japan very sad my prayers goes out to you all very sad from jamaica.
Thousands of scientific letters were sent to all parts of the world, warning them to stop the melting of the ice caps at the poles and the Himalayas, to reduce earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and terrestrial eclipses, and and and…

Sorry:
I see science surrounded, and there is a lot about science, and very few of them are scientists…
Please: do not waste time, we want a solution, not just studies…

You can imagine the earth without water, water balances the shape of the earth, and its revolving or orbiting around its self, and the sun. Ebb and tide are considered as a safety vale for the earth, and its rotation.
Earth with water slows its revolving…
The water increased because of the melting of ice caps of polars and Himalayas, therefore the force of revolving increases too…
NOW:The length of the year now is [ 365 1/4 +_(2 minutes )]….

Unfortunately: There are several theories taught in universities in a wrong way…
I will explain these theories and studies at any scientific conference…
Please hold the conference at the University of Melbourne…
Abstract :
The energy that dominates the earth is very great, some of it is natural, like the heat of the sun and volcanoes, and some of it is human action, by cutting down trees, without replacing them and cultivating in their place…
There are five forces that control or dominate the planet…
1- The first theory (horizontal dynamic movement) and its end…
The occurrence of storms, rain, floods and snow, at unexpected times and places, is because of the expiration of this theory, which needs to be balanced…
2- The second theory (vertical dynamic movement) and its end…
This movement or force controls or dominates the earthquakes, earth cracks, drying up of rivers and lakes, earth openings, mountain collapses, and the emergence of drinking water springs on the ground…
It becomes out of control…
These phenomena increased due to the end of this theory…
The third theory: it is water that rotates the earth…
The fourth theory: the Earth's axis of rotation has tilted 2° degrees…
The fifth theory: The Earth has a new orbit…
These studies had completed and sent on July 26th 2000
