  1. Schools and the govt absolutely failed children during the pandemic.

But if anything, it should have shown parents the value of in school education and that schools should always be kept open.

  2. I think kids should be in school all the time.

But I’d struggle to keep a straight face while making the argument that parents should be fined for a one week holiday, but it is acceptable to have them out of school for months on government orders.

  3. I learnt very little from school, most of my learning is from TV/Movies and experience. School spent most of its time trying to calm kids down then we had 20 mins of nothing.

Not to mention half the teachers sneaking off to have sex (not with pupils).

  4. School, particularly secondary school, is hard for a lot of children and the one size fits all approach doesn’t work. I’m not saying I have a good solution but we don’t expect every adult to be able to do the same job in the same way, so why is it logical to take this approach to children.

Pre covid we told children that going to school was the only way to get an education and progress in life, and children with SEN needs or who were being bullied were encouraged to persevere with school even when it was distressing for them because it seemed to be the only option. But now, it’s hard to explain to a child who knows that online learning and working at home exist that they have to go

Two of my nieces are very bright and well behaved, but they have needs that make school overwhelming for them because of the noise and the way other children react to their differences.

  5. If kids don’t go to school, how would parents be able to work?

  6. Id certainly agree at least *some* children do not need to go to school every day. Personally I prefer my child learn and be happy and socialise positively, and unfortunately school was a barrier to that in a way lockdown was not. Things outside of school have only gotten better after lockdown.

Id be interested to see what the numbers are like for parents of disabled and nd kids versus other kids, and how the numbers differ across different schools (eg specialist schools, outstanding vs failing schools etc)

  7. Many childrens educated suffered by not attending school.

Have people just forgotten the massive effort to catch them up.

  8. Real “I never learnt anything in school and I turned out alright” energy. Yeah, maybe *you* didn’t

  9. One in three parents believe pandemic showed children do not need to go to school every day.

Two in three parents believe pandemic showed children need to go to school every day, including weekends.

  10. Of all of the impacts during that time that would not be realised overnight, the impact on education for children in my mind at the time was always the one that frightened me the most. A child not in school regularly is a lost child whose opportunities in life will be curtailed, one way or another. No parent should be comfortable with their kids missing education. Not. One.

  11. State schools were created by capitalists in the 19th century to turn farm workers into obedient factory and office workers, and break apart familial structures. They’re about power and control. It’s unsurprising that model is failing within a modern social and economic structure.

  12. It’s almost like a school system underfunded to the point it is effectively collapsing as we speak doesn’t serve all children with a one size fits all approach quite as well as it might.

  13. Here we go. Kids in school two days a week and one day every 3 weeks. Then they sell of 2/3 of schools and cut the numbers of teachers needed.

  14. I was always off school and I’m dumb as shit , I wouldn’t do that to my kids

  15. As an educator, watching children try to function within a school system after the pandemic was so upsetting. Social issues, academic issues, behavioural, and more. And the children who take more days off are slower to adjust, if you keep your child out of school for a considerable amount of time it is my belief that it will affect them into adulthood.

  16. This country is getting more dumb every year I swear to god.

  17. I wholeheartedly disagree with one in three parents, which to be honest is a massive improvement from my norm.

  18. 1 in 3 parent clearly haven’t worked with lockdown/post lockdown kids then…

Incredibly low academically, behaviourly and emotionally and entitled parenting has shot through the roof. I mean if you don’t care at all about how your child develops their education and resilience then carry on!

Attendance has been shocking since covid and it makes it incredibly difficult to teach because children are constantly missing pockets of content and are unsettled. Then we have to catch them up in our own time, which is already minimal. Not forgetting that we still have to aim to get them to where they’d be if they were in school every day. Not a helpful attitude by parents.

  19. Even if children don’t need to go to school every day, the governments stance on 4 day working weeks and WAH shows they still absolutely think people should be going to work in an office 5 days a week, so even if there was solid evidence to back this up, I don’t think we would see anything change.

  20. You bring up dim children, who become young dim parents, who have their own children, and so on. Societal regression.
