Paschal is a decent minister. Probably one of the few widely respected politicians in Ireland.
If this is a random selection remember that 50% of respondents have lower than average intelligence.
36% plus 9% equals 45%.
well that’s not even close
On the face of it a good result for Pascal, but he’s had a charmed time in office to some extent. It is easy to be a popular finance Minister when conditions are such that you can turn the money taps on.
I’d imagine Charlie McCreevy would have had similar numbers in 2000. I’m not sure though that his opposition number (Michael Noonan) at the time would have polled as well as Pearse Doherty under those circumstances.

The most competent and coherent TD got the most approval. Shocking /s
McGrath & Donohoe, have Economics/Finance/commerce degrees, professional
qualifications & experience. Doherty has a national certificate in civil engineering and has had literally never had a job in the real world, It would be safe to say Pearse would be completely dependent on civil servants & advisors to explain basic concepts to him. At least half the population of Ireland would better suited for the role. Irish Voters don’t have anything like coherent preferences. Most people pay little attention to politics; when they vote, they vote irrationally and for contradictory reasons. Even voters who pay close attention to politics are prone to make political decisions on the basis of social identities and not an honest examination of reality.
I think I’m right in say the following but can’t find the articles in relation to it so correct me as necessary. It seems alot of people forget about the fact that donoghoe made a 1 billion euro maths mistake when balancing the budget one year and it was Doherty that had pointed it out when debating it.
The issue I have with Pearse
First the insurance bill he came up with would have cost people money instead of saving money. He was told by CBoI etc that if it was passed it would in fact mean insurance companies would have to give zero discounts to anyone and drive up everyones insurance. yet he ploughed ahead and told everyone it was great. Now the only hope is he done that because he knew it would never pass, but if he actually thought it was a good bill then we are in trouble. Plus not sure why he spent so long on it(2 years or something) and still had huge holes

Second the changing of the tax brackets, first we got told it was everyone over 140k would pay additional tax, then it was 100k. To me that is alarming that 40k got whipped off it in 12 months or so. 40k is a huge jump and would suggest again he didn’t do his job properly before proposing that as part of the SF election bid. Is 100k right? or just another number pulled from his ass?
Third, property tax. His great plan is to get rid of LPT. This is in fact just a tax break for the rich. Yes everyone pays it but the money is going to the local county council and I know in my area I have seen serious improvements since it was introduced. Nobody wants to go back to the bad old day of no playground within a 50 mile radius, or just head to Dublin if you want a playground
At the moment, yes LPT is a tax, but it is a tax that nobody can dodge, so the lad in his multi million house putting all his money into accounts and paying very little to no tax still has to pay up and pay up a lot. Getting rid of LPT will just let them off without paying that and still paying f**k all tax

I do think he is a good politician, I do think he has bought into his “character” of the man who shouts at everyone in the Dail and is losing his message a little bit. But the above for me is the reasons why I think people might not consider him for Finance. I am sure some people might not like hearing this but its just my opinion
In fairness to Pascal he seems actually intelligent and decent at his job. More interested in doing it than talking shite to the media about the opposition.
I’d put Simon Harris up there as somewhat competent too. Or at least a good speaker.
Probs not gonna vote fg cos the lad in my area is a dose. One independent lad who actually handles local issues has my vote, then not sure after that.
Any of them in favor of removing deemed disposal?
