Yes the whole thing was shut down because it was only used by rich people as cheap labor, and not as a cultural/learning experience as intended.
The government said “they want to cancel” the au pair arrangement, some time last year in spring. But I can’t find any more recent news, nor anything other than just the government’s intent. Nothing on the actual implementation. Might as well be still up and running…
Its a scam to exploit poor women from Asia as house help and maids.
In return the maids often tries to find some schmuck to marry for a visa while she’s here.
Not yet, the proposal to end it is still under consideration. The deadline for people and organizations to voice their opinion has passed, and it does look like it will be ended. The reason why is that a lot of families have treated their au pairs like housemaids giving them way too much work.
