Can’t help but feeling they would have said the same thing if they got done.
> We have been accused of erasing history – but that’s impossible.
Wonder how that fits in with whitewashing – arguably another activity that erases history.
I would have been a lot more at ease with this if there was some limp wristed conclusion about how these four couldn’t be identified as being involved in the act from the evidence at hand. Or were found guilty but given some non-punishment.
Rather than literally admitting they did the deed but weren’t punished because the jury saw the court as a political one in this instance.
Right wingers demonstrably doing stuff against the law and being let off by a sympathetic jury would give people here aneurysms.
The law should apply even to those we agree with.
I do believe these statues have a place in our history, we need to own up to the good AND the bad of our past. We should do something similar to Hungary and “Memento Park” and put all statues that have a level of infamy together with records of the historic nature each one has. It is no good to just ignore or whitewash this part of our culture, we should own up to it with a more modern portrayal of understanding.
More like confirms that the law doesn’t matter if the social media pitchforks are out
I’m gonna tear down so many statues that offend me now this precedent has been set 🙂 feelings over the rule of law 👊
There is no doubt it’s ciriminal damage they were tried by jury and were innocent. You can’t simply wander towns and cities vandalising what you don’t like, we have a political system to address these issues. It’s amusing that the generation that blames ‘boomers’ for most of their troubles don’t have any trouble motivating themselves to vandalism, yet couldn’t be arsed to vote to stay in the EU. There are countries, towns, cities that are sympathetic to these vandals but perhaps not as tolerant. If you don’t like the good or bad of British history, perhaps look elsewhere to regimes that fit better with your ideals.
I saw this statue in a Bristol museum. History hasn’t been erased at all
