Moved into a new home, and my fireplace has this dial under it; What does this mean? I think “auf” in “on”? But what does “zu” mean? (I am not fluent in German im sorry I am still learning.)

Auf = Open, Zu = Closed
What type of fireplace are we talking about? Like wood fired?
This could be opening (AUF) or closing (ZU) a bypass valve to the chimney. In AUF it would therefore be easier to get a fire going but then should be switched to ZU so the hot air takes a longer route.
But as said, hard to say without more details on the fireplace.
open/closed. Probably the ventilation.
