  1. The legend in this map is misleading. There is no consensus that Suomi would come from Proto-Samic or that it would come from the word for Sami person. I get that there is (?) but that is hardly enough of a sign for such an unfounded claim

  2. I don’t think Bavarians have a specific *Finnlånd* word for us. The use the basic German *Finnland*.

    /s

  3. Sami. From Northern Sami Sápmi, from one of the Sami languages, of *uncertain origin/meaning*, but possibly related to Proto-Balto-Slavic *źémē (“land”).

Suomi. From Proto-Finnic *soomi, probably from earlier *sämä and related to Proto-Samic *sāmē.

  4. I legit thought Suomi came from suomaa, meaning swamp lands, on account of the many swamplands we have here.

I’m not sure where I got that idea, but it sounds fun at least.

  5. What’s with the å in Bavarian name for Finland? Is it intended to be an ä?

  6. Well actually we also say Finland in Finland – as the Finland has two official languages.
