David Soul was the star of iconic moments as Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson in the 1970s crime-solving series Starsky & Hutch.

Classic scenes have resurfaced following the news that the US-born actor has died aged 80.

He passed away on Thursday, 4 January, surrounded by his family, his wife Helen Snell announced.

“His smile, laughter, and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched,” Ms Snell said.

Soul reprised his role opposite Paul Michael Glaser as Detective Dave Starsky in the 2004 remake Starsky & Hutch, starring Ben Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch.

  1. David Soul's most memorable Starsky and Hutch scenes as actor dies aged 80 2236pm 5.1.24 he's mon repose now. this is sad for me. seriously….

  2. Love Starsky & Hutch, such an iconic show and the best part is knowing that David and Paul became lifelong friends. My condolences to everyone who loved him especially Paul, who already has experienced devastating losses in his life, RIP David.

  3. Sorry to hear the news of David Soul’s passing this morning.

I was in high school in the UK when Starkey and Hutch started on TV in 1977 I think. My Dad made hippy jewellery and I used to try and sell some to my class mates, with little success it was the year of punk. But I then got hold of a load of Starkey and Hutch cards and they were in great demand by the girls. But instead of selling them blind I let them pick out the ones they wanted. After all the ones with Hutch on had been sold interest quickly fell away.

Later me and my mate got really into Hammer Vampire movies that were on TV on Friday nights at the time. I think the other kids thought we were strange. That is until Salem’s Lot came on TV then I think we became the school cool Vampire Experts.

I started learning guitar simple 3 and 4 chord strumming of punk and rock n roll. Funny I was able to figure out a quite complex picking piece and vocal version of David Soul and his great guitarist and band on Silver Lady much in advance of any punk strumming I was doing then. We used to go parties and play guitar and sing rock stuff, and my surprise piece was to drop in Silver Lady among the punk rock sessions. That song came real easy for me and I thought I was heading for guitar greatness but oddly it was a one off song anomalous gift.

I’ve been on his web site before and noticed his obscure philosophical allusions like when he was doing the dishes and referencing Heraclitus.

He was great in Magnum Force as the corrupt policeman who thought he could fly. His performance in Salem’s Lot as a modern day Vampire Hunter has still never been surpassed since. Along with Peter Cushing, David is on a very short list of actors who have been convincing as modern day vampire hunters.

I’m going to work on Silver Lady today and watch Salem’s Lot again tonight.
    David Soul RIP.
