Sweden sees record cold as temperatures plunge below -40 Celsius • FRANCE 24 English

  1. The main reason why they have cancelled various train routes is not the cold as such but safety: If something happens, e.g. an electric failure, there is no way to evacuate the train. Those tracks often cross pure wilderness, far away from any roads.
    It is only -13° in the far south today, which is not a problem and far from my personally experienced record here of -26°, some 30 years ago.

  4. People claiming that this is normal have obviously not actually checked what the weather statistics say. -30 and around that is quite normal and wouldnt be news worthy. Having it -43 is on the other hand a different story. Yes it does happen, and its not super rare but its not normal at all. The average temp in northern Sweden during dec-feb (lapland that is) is between -16 and -30

  6. Where is the news value? It's Sweden, it gets one of these weeks every single winter. Just look at a map over the planet earth, or the Globe, we are on the same latitud as southern greenland or Northern Canada. Surprise much that it's cold?

  7. People are confusing weather with climate. We do have global warming, steady the earth is getting warmer, a short period of extreme cold isn’t something that contradicts that.

  8. As a young man in my teens in the center of Lapland, the coldest I have experienced is minus 45. Just for fun I went outside in a bare nylon skirt. The nylon became like a sheet of tin sheet, and I the water wapor on me was like a cloud of steam. The cars only managed to get to 50 km/hour and the wheel was barable possible to turn. Needless to say I did not stay out for long.

  25. I think January and February 1658 had to be colder than January 2024 because the Swedes were capable to march across the Belts in Denmark. King Charles X Gustav of Sweden led the Swedish army from Jutland across the ice of the Little Belt to Funen and the Great Belt to reach Zealand. It was a cold bad winter for Danes. Later the 1690s marked the lowest point of the Little Ice Age, of colder and wetter weather especially in Finland and Sweden.

    Unfortunately a Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius (1701-1744) wasn't yet available to calculate those temperatures.

  27. Not a record but it has not been this cold here in Northern Sweden for the last 10-15 years and it was much more common 30 years ago. In the 80s and 90s it was also colder (officially downwards -50 degrees and unofficially below -50 in some places).

  32. Why didnt no one do news abt Finland even though Finland was much colder than Sweden. South of sweden where most people live was like above -10

  33. 40 below happens to be the temperature where Fahrenheit and Celsius are the same. In other words, -40 C = -40 F. That is darn cold anyway you look at it.
