Has any seen that the redevelopments to Oxford Street have been approved? It mostly includes the pavements being slightly widened and more space between the where traffic stops and pedestrians cross.

I must admit when I saw the news I thought it was going to be something a bit more ambitious.

Thoughts on this appreciated, I’d also love to hear from anyone who lives in the borough and how they feel about a pedestrianised Oxford Street.

  1. I’ll be honest, I’m dead against it. I mean, people forget that traders need access to DIXONS!

  2. I feel a bit conflicted. The renders look nice and like it’s a decent improvement.

But it makes me think it kills the idea of a pedestrian-only Oxford Street – which is ultimately what I think is best. I guess I’m happy they’re doing something at least.

  3. The thing that frustrates me the most is the incrementalism.

I have no doubt that **eventually** we’ll get a pedestrianised Oxford street. But that scheme will no doubt cost tens of millions, and that will be on top of the £90M being spent on this.

Just do it right first time, FFS.

  4. “Ambitious”.

They’ve been proposing pedestrianisation for about twenty years (not including a prospective labour council’s plan to pedestrianise all of Soho back in the 80s) and every time it gets knocked back by the same cowards who propose it.

  5. I moved to Leeds in 2019. The main shopping street here is fully pedestrianised.

This is what it looked like in the 70s: https://live.staticflickr.com/3734/13411621174_7cce4bfc3e_b.jpg

Pretty easy to see which one is nicer. It’s absurd that they’re still dragging their feet on pedestrianising Oxford Street, and I genuinely don’t understand why anyone would oppose it.
