Over 240 still missing after earthquake in Japan | DW News
Four days after a major earthquake rocked Japan authorities are in a Race Against Time to locate survivors among the 242 people are believ still to be missing the death total has now risen to 92 Japan’s western coastline was worst affected by the 7.6 magnitude event which flattened entire neighborhoods and
Damaged infrastructure a large area of land was flooded by the tsunami triggered by the earthquake Japan’s government has earmarked around 30 million euros worth of Aid to support affected communities our correspondent James chater joins us from wajima one of the worst affected areas welcome James give
Us a situ a sense of the situation there well where I’m currently standing is outside what used to be uh W jima’s Morning Market this used to be a really key part of the the city a really bustling part of the city in almost every Direction I can see now there is
Complete Devastation the reason why the devastation was so bad at this particular location is shortly after the earthquake um struck here there was a fire that ripped through much of the buildings um that that are around me the reason I’m wearing a hard hat is because the weather also today has been pretty
Bad very strong winds and and strong rain as well and because there’s so much loose debris on the buildings um a lot of it has been falling off uh and blowing um into the road as you mentioned search and rescue operations are ongoing there’s one taking place
About 100 met in front of us just here where a gentleman um is still looking for his wife who was uh we believe trapped under the rubble in a building just in front of us 3 days ago but still uh no signs there were police officers
Looking for about two hours just now and they couldn’t find her right the devastation we see behind you looks absolute where have people been moved to and what is is there a plan for them to return to their homes well in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake where most people have been
Relocated to as medical centers within regima City itself and other medical facilities some people in hospitals as well um the bigger question really is in the long term where these people can return to in in wajima there are so many homes that have been destroyed people
Are feeling very raw at the moment um and not really sure what the future holds in comparison to a point of comparison which might be a useful one to draw on here is after the 2011 earthquake in which tens of thousands of people died in Japan some people were
Relocated to government uh provided facilities but then ended up being in those houses for many years um whilst homes were rebuilt for them but those the temporary homes weren’t of necessarily the best quality if you look at the level of Destruction here although the death toll hasn’t been as
High as that earthquake in 2011 you can imagine that it’s going to be months if not years before um this city wajima returns to any semblance of normality and a quick word about um International Aid Japan has said that it will only accept International aid from the United States why is
That yeah we asked this question to a police officer just um a moment ago and he was a little bit confused as well um he said that you know if if countries are willing to offer Aid they should be accepting it wherever it comes from the likely reason is that the level of
Cooperation and communication between the Japan and the US is already pretty strong there are some 50 000 us Personnel military personnel stationed in Japan and so the level of kind of collaboration that already exists is probably quite High and the important context again here is that this this
Region is very remote and it’s difficult to kind of coordinate different emergency response teams um coming to this area and that’s probably why they’ve elected to just go with a with in a sense with what they know thanks for that James DWS James chater in Japan

When earthquakes happen, normal code of procedures in Japan advise people not to rush outside the building and find available shelters inside. I think that led to a lot of people being trapped inside homes and buildings.
No rescue teams or medical staff could be seen on the ruins. There are still 240 people missing, most likely still trapped under the rubble. Japan's post-disaster relief measures failed so completely that it is hard to imagine that this is a developed country. Judging from the government's indifference to the people, mobilization ability, organizational ability and cohesion, Japan can no longer compete with China
So sad I feel bad for people who have earthquake and it can repet it self over over aging so sad I hope they can rebuild 😢
Japan's government is incapable of saving people. They didn't send enough rescue crews to Noto immediately after the earthquake. Many of disaster victims including children haven't eaten anything for three days. Last night, Kishida was on the TV talking about the next election. He doesn't care about those people suffering from the disaster.
God bless our dear friends and important allies in Japan.
The reporter is very handsome ❤
wait. this guy is very obviously in front of a green screen. wtf.
The PM Fumio Kishida appeared on a TV show talking with smiles. He will hold New Year’s parties as originally scheduled although there are still many people buried alive and the needs for food and goods in Ishikawa.
As a Japanese citizen, I feel ashamed of having him as PM.
Technic or natur catastrophy please on't blame innocent people, grandmas don't know nothing about TECHNIC. Ask the voices, maybe they have something to do with chaos and catastrophies.
LIES, i see the green screen you failed to make it look real
don't worry, he has a helmet
Actually its still pretty shocking for how low the victim are, turkey earthquake with less magnitude kill more then 50.000
The reporter with all kinds of rizz coming at you in a smirk and the headline saying DEATH TOLL RISES
wow this dosey pillock is some reporter even with his helmet in front of a green screen
One would think these so-called reporters would learn how to pronounce Japanese place names. THERE IS NO ACCENT IN JAPANESE!
だから佐喜真淳の方がヤバいんだって
Missing? Maybe mother nature never intended for them to be found.
One of the local news are advising individuals not to come. The number of accessible roads were limited to begin with and even more limited due to landslides. They are having trouble letting emergency vehicles and defense force vehicles in because of civilians wanting to get in/out. I think they are not yet ready to receive groups of people coming in to make the situation even worse.
I pray for those that are missing, may God help them to find them, and also, may the Lord God help them to rebuild their lives, in Jesus Christ Name.

i havent seen ANY international help even from the united states California has the worlds best earthquake rescue teams but they are not there and i understand its remote there and the roads are destroyed so where are the helicopters ? and the search dogs? i have only see one search dog and that was yesterday by now most the trapped people would be dead due to the lack of effort.
I'm surprised no one here has managed to somehow blame Israel.
James looks like he could not be bothered to be in front of the camera, enthusiasm much…
Had this happened in China the usual Sinophobic bots and trolls would be laughing about "tofu buildings".
not gonna lie, the thumbnail of that fine men caught my attention too. knew straightaway he was gay and confirmed it online xD
Not gonna lie!!! THE RESCUE TEAMS ARE SO SLOW!!!!! JAPAN IS ON DEPOPULATION.
Earthquake feels me I’m on earth always
When I was 12 I experienced Fukushima earthquake
Since then I understand the people of ancient era
Why they gave their life for nature
Damn James is a sexy sexy man.
Also wishing Japan a fast recovery
Based on his body language, he has a green screen behind him.
i have a question, why is this guy wearing a helmet in the open? hes not even helping people there, what is he protiection himself from? some magic out of air?
Stay strong Japanese.our thoughts and prayer .
Tramatic Events all over the earth :/
i am sorry for the people of Japan. they take so much care to create a beautiful country now in ruins.
God bless Japan
Only help from U.S . Ah forget the history
🙏🏻
Prayers for the families
Japan has plenty of money to help their own people they spend billions on building their armed forces every year, USA has enough problems we don’t need to intervene , I promise Japan wouldn’t help us and has never helped us in any of our disasters
I'm Japanese. I'm very happy that there are offers for relief and support from various countries, but aftershocks are still continuing in the disaster area. There was also an aftershock with a seismic intensity of 5 or more this morning (6th January). Please be careful of the reporter 🙏
Sad..
But how many died,,from covid,,🤔,,wait there new virus is out,,,they no longer test any of them flights for covid cases
The us already spending billions on war now they are sole financer of Japan…damn
Hope they rebuild with better earthquake structures..not sure when those buildings were built
This correspondent is flaming…
will only accept help from the good old U S of A, this makes no sense at all and whoever came up with this should be ashamed of themselves
