Nigeria university ban: Kenya, Uganda added to list of foreign degree crackdown • FRANCE 24
Chinu asunda joins me now with more from Lagos chinu first of all give us a sense of the the context here why is this sud there this sudden mistrust of foreign qualifications okay there has been an an investigation from an investive journalist reporter who backed um a
Degree from konu that is uh Ben Republic from Ben Republic University within six weeks and also practic in the mandatory one year as came organized by the Nigerian youth service corpse um that was the report that came out uh later uh last year and um this actually uh
Erupted or had a ripple effect and the Ministry of Education decided to look into this well this is not the first time we are having such a report in Nigeria especially uh of fake degrees manting from universities or from private institutions in uh bener Republic and Togo um where we have a lot
Of Nigerians um going for school for for several reasons it could be Financial it could be um the educational uh the failures or the loopholes in the educational sector in Nigeria which leads to um them preferring to go to uh the schools in the neighboring countries so the minister of education has
Actually decided to look into the situation after the reports emanating that a journalist went to school for 6 weeks and after which has a degree and has actually been enrolled in the NYC that is natural called in Nigeria so what exactly is the scope of this this Crackdown by the government on
On um suspected fake degrees and is there not a risk that students from legitimate institutions end up being penalized by these measures it’s so it’s rather unfortunate and the government mentioned that they’re actually not going to consider these students uh but yes the association of Nigerian students uh
Which has a lot of fractions actually appealing some of the fractions appealing to the Ministry of Education to look into the matter and to consider those who have also uh been advanced in their education legitimately of course and penalize the bad eggs uh in the crate of eggs there is no need to
Penalize all students when uh we also have a lot of good ones and just have few bad ones but of course the investigation that the Ministry of Education has to carry out would actually reveal a lot of things yes is being a ban uh to their accreditation and revaluation of the certificate there
Will be a pause if the students are in school we have a a school year that is running so there will probably be a pause for these students who do not know their outcome until the end of the investigation thereafter the the the government or the minister of Education
Might want to consider them depending on the results of their investigation so you’re mentioning that investigation there so besides cracking down on certain universities what else is the government doing to make this process of earning foreign degrees more transparent the nerian government does not have a lot of power when it comes to
Foreign uh educational system um which uh obliges but the Nigerian educational system obliges every every citizen or every good citizen to have a year of service after you’ve obtained your degree elsewhere and that is where the evaluation and the accreditation comes in um so they wouldn’t have a lot of
Power on the foreign scene but internally um there is a a process for any school to be accredited and there are some requirements and even if when a student has to get into a school there are cut of marks there there’s a process due diligence that is always done before
A school is accredited and before a student students actually gains admission into a school which is a normal thing yes which is a normal thing in every country so um I believe that the Nigerian government is doing uh the right thing when it comes to checking
The process that it has laid on ground and to Checkmate the ones that are coming in from foreign countries thanks very much chundu there speaking to us from Lagos
Institutions from Kenya and Uganda have been added to the list of red flagged foreign universities that Nigeria believes have been handing over fake degrees. The education minister said affected students are part of the problem. FRANCE 24’s Chinwe Ossondu reports from Lagos, Nigeria.

A scam from Nigeria? Shocking.
It's interesting how cheap Kenyan degrees reach even Nigeria. It's only 5 dollars and you have a fake Kenyan public university degree. It's what Kenyan politicians pay in Kenyan cities and they are eligible for public office.
it is ok oga …we shall not come to nigeria ..least we get conned
Every degree has an.owner if he or she is interiewed can.handle the conversation is the best way foeward…knowledge has no time limits..long or short
Govt get out of education ppl are litterate…accredation is money making scheme
Instead of putting a strong collective effort of verification & validation process in place they are banning as if they are clean with their yahoo boys.
You mention Togo,Benin degrees but put Uganda and Kenya in your subtitle, how about you start by evaluating your own degree.Get East Africa out of your chaos.Your students come to our countries and look for small unaccredited briefcase schools
Now we understand where they all got their degrees . 😂😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣 honestly this is just plain funny..the kings of scams are going after kenya and uganda…y
Charcoal calling pot black.Imagine president with fake certificate trying to bam evrerybody.
Let’s go Nigeria 🇳🇬 !
Nigeria is on to something especially with regard to Kenya. Lots of unqualified individuals with paid for degrees roaming around. For sure majority of academic institutions in Kenya have failed to safeguard the integrity of the education system.
This is a Nigerian problem their citizens look for trusted areas and start faking degrees nothing to do with banned countries
Should be the other way lol smh which Kenyans are going to Nigeria for studies
The fake certificate started from mr president. Let them check the president first before you tackle the students.
What is this ? Nigeria is trying to clean up by throwing the rest under the bus . Nigeria 🇳🇬😂😂😂😂 we all know you .
First start by banning the yahoo boys, the online scamming, and the illegal migrations by boats to European countries. Thanks 🙏
As a kenyan am excited so that Nigerians are banned from our country after all we are among the countries with the best education system in Africa and Nigerian politicians know that one way to cleanse their mess is to involve others. You cant imagine the number of apprenticeships that Kenyan universities have with global institutions…..if your guys print fake degrees and then attach a random name of other countries dont make it our problem,…….I pray they do it and stop alleging coz I know they cant dare do it…… meanwhile no Kenyan travels to Nigeria for anything leave alone education 😂😂😂😂
We all know that Nigeria is desperately trying to stop the outward flow of higher education students from its country to Uganda – which has one of the most robust HE sectors on the continent.
Good luck with that, instead of sorting your internal mess in Nigerian universities.
Kenya Uganda have the best, a unit left one can't graduate, no shortcut to a degree. Nigerian government is crazy
When i look into university rankings ,Nogerian universities are all in backpage and East Universities have a higher ceiling , Nigerians need to get more researchers not scam agents with biased reports
For one I go to Yale and just by looking at this something does not smell clean. If that young man was smart the school just sent it. You do not have to be in school all of your life. You can learn while you earn. They need to get a real person to check into this. Because the water is not clean
Kenyans think they are powerful to retaliate back to Nigeria 😂. Lol nice joke 😂
Still wondering were Kenya and Uganda came to this Nigerian Fiasco?
i actually don't think a blanket ban is the right way to go, if these institutions are accredited by the the ministries of education in the country where they are domiciled.
who well ?. better dey nigeria?
