Kenya and Uganda added to foreign degree crackdown list at Nigeria universities • FRANCE 24

Thanks very much for staying with us time now for I on Africa with me Georgia Calvin Smith tonight Nigeria widens the net to degrees earned in Kenya and Uganda as part of its Crackdown on fraudulent foreign certificates qualifications from Benin and Togo are earlier targeted following expose in a

National newspaper also total put former Benes prime minister Lionel zenzu the head of land acquisition for its controversial multi-billion dollar oil projects in UGA and Tanzania it says promises to overhaul dealings with affected communities is not greenwashing and more farmers in Tunisia turn to cultivating carab the seeds of

The trees survive the droughts that have been hitting the agricultural sector hard and as well as being a sweet substitute for sugar they offer potentially lucrative business in the Cosmetics Market but first institutions from from Kenya and Uganda have been added to the list of red flagged foreign universities

And campuses that Nigeria believes have been handing over fake degrees Abuja says that the suspect schools will no longer have their qualifications accredited in the country they’ve been accused of being degree Mills whose documentation Bears little reflection of a student’s work or AB ability degrees from Benin and Togo were also earlier

Suspended this week the education Minister said that he has little sympathy for affected students saying that some of them are part of the problem chin asunda joins me now with more from Lagos chinu first of all give us a sense of the context here why is this sudden there this sudden mistrust

Of foreign qualifications okay there has been an an investigation from an investigative journalist reporter who backed um a degree from konu that is Ben Republic from Ben Republic University within six weeks and also practice in the mandatory onee scheme organized by the Nigerian youth service Corps um that was the

Report that came out uh later uh last year and um this actually uh erupted or had a ripple effect and the Ministry of Education decided to look into this well this is not the first time we are having such a report in Nigeria especially uh of fake degrees emanating from

University or from private institutions in uh Ben Republic and Togo um where we have a lot of Nigerians um going for school for for several reasons it could be Financial it could be um the educational uh the failures or the loopholes in the educational sector in Nigeria which leads to um them

Preferring to go to uh the schools in the neighboring countries so the minister of education has actually decided to look into the situation after after the reports emanating that a journalist went to school for six weeks and after which has a degree and has actually been enrolled in the NY SE that

Is natural called in Nigeria so what exactly is the scope of this this Crackdown by the government on on um suspected fake degrees and is there not a risk that students from legitimate institutions end up being penalized by these measures it’s so it’s rather unfortunate and the government mention that they

Actually not going to consider these students uh but yes the association of Nigerian students uh which uh has a lot of fractions actually appealing some of the fractions are appealing to the Ministry of Education to look into the matter and to consider those who have also uh been advanced in the education

Legitimately of course and penalize the bad eggs uh in the crate of eggs there is no need to penalize all students when uh we also have a lot of good ones and just have few bad ones but of course the investigation that the Ministry of Education has to carry out would

Actually reveal a lot of things yes is being a ban uh to their accreditation and evaluation of the certificate there will be a pause if the students are in school we have a a school year that is running so there will probably be a pause for these students who do not know

Their outcome until the end of the investigation thereafter the the the government or the minister of Education might want to consider them depending on the results of their investigation so you’re mentioning that investigation there so besides cracking down on certain universities what else is the government doing to make this process of

Earning foreign degrees more transparent the Nigerian government does not have a lot of power when it comes to foreign uh educational system um which uh obliges but the Nigerian educational system obliges every every citizen or every good citizen to have a year of service after you have obtained your

Degree elsewhere and that is where the evaluation and the accreditation comes in um so they wouldn’t have a lot of power on the foreign scene but internally um there is a a process for any school to be accredited and there are some requirements and even if when a

Student has to get into a school there are cut off marks there there’s a process due diligence that is always done before a school is accredited and before a student actually gains admission into a school which is a normal thing yes which is a normal thing

In every country so um I believe that the Nigerian government is doing um the right thing when it comes to checking the process that it has laid on ground and to Checkmate the ones that are coming in from foreign countries thanks very much chinu there speaking to us

From Lagos now French energy energ giant totel has said that it’s launching a review of its land acquisition practices as it pushes ahead with multi-billion dollar drilling projects in Uganda and Tanzania the plans have triggered huge backlash from conservationists and those who say that the needs of affected communities are being overlooked Clarice

Natural substitute for sugar and carab gum is also used in the Cosmetic industry making it a potentially lucrative crop and more F farmers in Tunisia are catching on as our correspondents report in benzer these Farmers have their own way of trying to fight the drought that is plagued this Northern

Region for example s nafer took a course in permaculture after cleaning around all car plants we pulled mulch the straw helps stop the evaporation of water and so maximum amount of water remains for the plant the carab tree is Hardy easy to grow and uses little

Water like any tree it needs water for its first two years of growth and then afterwards it’s very self-sufficient it’s strong it resists drought the Las cap Association want to help optimize farming practices they support and Supply carab seeds to professionals like Maha some have found the crop to be surprisingly

Lucrative before where there was a lot of rain people planted populares That Grew quickly there was no demand for organic but now things have totally changed carobs are not in demand as sugar substitute it’s not only a sugar substitute in 2019 Maha opened a workshop in the city of jenba to process carab

The carab has lots of benefits it’s rich in fiber micronutrients and protein and here the waste which isn’t for human consumption we use for animal Feed there’s also big demand for carab gum from the Cosmetic sector a promising indicator of the growth potential of carab seed derivatives on the international market well that’s it for iron Africa for now thanks for joining us though do you so again if you can till then take Care the 51% is celebrating its 10th anniversary hello I’m L young and welcome to the 51% a new show about women who are for the past decade we’ve been reporting on women who are reshaping our world four dedicated hosts in English French Arabic and Spanish A diversity of

  1. As a Kenyan, I think this is just a bunch of nonsense. Nigeria ought to build better institutions so their citizens stop coming here

  2. The Nigerian government has no way of tackling fraudulent citizens or put in place mechanisms to verify degrees. We know many Nigerians are always looking for easy ways out…

  3. Nigerians wants to be the only one working with fake degrees in South Africa but wont tolerate fake things in Nigeria mxm sis this cursed nation

  5. It seems people in the comments that are from kenya don't have a bigger picture of what this is about. This ban is specifically targeted at Nigerians that get degree certificates within 6 months 😂 and the universities that provide those certificates.
It's not targeted at ALL kenyan universities, this goes across the board including fraudulent universities in the US, Uganda, Togo, UK and also Nigeria.

  6. This is comical considering Nigerian is the most corrupt nation on earth evidenced by yahoo boys who sell fake degrees for any university in Nigeria.

  7. Anyone who goes to Nigeria to look for a job must be mentally caput, how does one run to look for a job where there is a mass exodus of degrees holders

  8. It’s Nigerians travelling to these Nations and then travelling back to Nigeria claiming that they have obtained degrees from these Nations. They forge the documents themselves

  9. Of all the countries to ban, Kenya ??? Come on Naija. We know of Benin, Togo, and Uganda, but Kenya ?? Make una enlighten us please.

  10. The problem is in Nigeria, on the verification process, to corruption and how they get fake certificates. There are no fake certificates scandals in kenya
