We got all these welfare provisions because back in the 50s and 60s the elites were shit-scared of communism and willing to part with a good chunk of their wealth to keep the status quo. There is no equivalent now. Politicians will continue to tax working people ever harder to try to keep state services going and when that isn’t enough anymore, they’ll collapse. They will be unwilling, or unable, to compel elites to contribute their share, and they’ll just keep getting wealthier. The rest of us will generously be allowed to live in their kingdoms: as long as we’re useful.
The last several decades have been an unusually equal period in human history, but we’ll soon start reverting to the norm. One prediction is big companies like Microsoft stepping in after public education systems have failed, educating (some) kids up to be their future workers while saddling them with debt for the privilege, designed to be impossible to pay back so you’re trapped working for them for life. Neo-serfdom.
