That was easily one of the worst monologues in awards show history
Gerwig handles this question with grace and tact.
A class act. This should be the example for media training for creatives.
That “jibe” was pretty tame, and Gerwig’s response reflects that. Hope the internet doesn’t take the bait and unleash any outrage krakens.
Great response. His Barbie joke wasn’t offensive. His monologue was terrible, more so because he was lashing out during the monologue, but the Barbie joke was fine.
Finally, a person who can take a joke
I don’t know who Jo Koy is, and it seems I never will.
That wasn’t a “jibe”, “slam” or any of the stupid buzzwords they use now. It was a joke. Not very funny, but a joke.
From the article in the OP
“Well, he’s not wrong. She’s the first doll that was mass produced with breasts, so he was right on. And you know, I think that so much of the project of the movie was unlikely because it is about a plastic doll… Barbie by her very construction has no character, no story, she’s there to be projected upon,” she said.
“The insight that [Barbie creator] Ruth Handler had when she was watching her daughter play with baby dolls, is she realised, ‘My daughter doesn’t want to pretend to be a mother. She wants to pretend to be a grown woman,’” she said.
“Barbie has been around since 1959… she’s been a villain and she’s been a hero, but it felt like in a way even though it’s so seemingly superficial that it was such a rich place to start.”
Barbie was a bunch of hot garbage
His monologue was nowhere near as bad as Redditors have been saying (I’m going to assume that most Redditors haven’t watched it yet and they’re just joining along the hive mind). Some jokes actually made me laugh (Robert De Niro laughed too), he should just have kept at taking jabs at celebs so the audience at home could laugh, but it all went downhill once he let the nervousness settle in and he started throwing his writers under the bus.
Nothing makes a man look more pathetic than trying tear down the accomplishments of successful women.
I hope Jo Koy is cancelled over this.
I’m impressed with her response, given how his ‘joke’ basically went against everything the Barbie movie was about.
Jo Koy seems like a moron comedian. This “joke” actually could have been funny if handled by a smarter comedian but instead he resorted to being immature and reinforcing lazy stereotypes about “big boobies”
The irony is Barbie doesn’t even have “big boobies”. Her breasts are proportioned pretty average. Jo Koy sounded like a dumbass saying it and then getting defensive when he didn’t get the reaction he wanted. That was more offensive than his crap humour.
That monologue was still ten times better than anything James Corden has ever hosted.
people whining about these jokes are so lame. they werent even offensive jokes. just shitty dumb jokes poking fun. i really dont get the issue. Everyone seemed fine with Ricky gervais making much harsher jokes.
