Press ombudsman tweet on media in relation to naming or arrested man

  1. The press ombudsman should be more concerned with the press tbh. Yeah they might not have ‘named’ the suspect but they did everything but.

  2. Fair play to the mods for shutting down this exact thing here when it started happening on that thread.

People seem to crave the validation “I know such and such person is a weirdo according to my friend from Facebook/school” and the upvotes from fellow armchair vigilantes who will carelessly ruin someone’s reputation for internet points.

I mean we all want the correct person caught so that he can’t victimise anyone else. Let the police do their job.

  3. To be fair the press did release enough info for him to be identified.

Tullamore is a small town, simply identifying him as a 40 year old Hungarian man with a previous violent criminal record was enough for the social media vigilante brigade to identify him.

The press in this country couldn’t give a fuck about doxxing people and potentially ruining their lives.

They love the whole media circus this case is turning into. Making money off human suffering is the the Irish press’s main bu$iness model.

  4. Social Media needs to be regulated and held to the same libel laws as anywhere else. It’s an absolute disgrace.

  5. People here giving out about the press.

Do you actually think they give a shit in the end.. its a story that’s not about covid.. that’s it, nothing else.

This is the only reason why the press give a rats about this absolute tragedy!

We are all to blame about this story spreading like wild fire as we are all here talking about it.

We are just as bad as the press.

  6. To be fair, the press have hung the lad in hospital today. There are headers out there who will go to the hospital or know someone who works there. All they have to do is look for the door with a Guard outside.

  7. I apologize in advance for my rambling, but in my defense I’ve had two glasses of wine earlier in the evening. I’d like to gripe about the entire social media culture in Ireland (and perhaps other countries, but I don’t follow the news elsewhere).

I personally actively block any information from social media from my consciousness. So, when people started linking Twitter posts pertaining to the former suspect’s identity, I not only ignored them, but I also started ignoring any print media that said the same. The sad truth is that too many journalists are presenting Twitter posts as reliable news sources, without due dilligence. As such, I wouldn’t doubt the man’s innocence until he was sent in front of a judge.

Social media as a news source is a much deeper problem in this country, though. Twitter has gained a level of authority because government and civil service agencies got into the habit of communicating that way directly or leaking information to the press, which then tweeted it out. In a feedback loop, the same journalists started believing everything they read on Twitter. Until this cycle is broken, news will remain unreliable to me. I already block anything from Twitter on Reddit, and the moment I see any social media post quoted in a new article, I stop reading. Consequently, I may not be the most up to date person in Ireland, but whatever is actually important will make its way to me through official statements or press releases. The press ombudsman should not look at regulating social media, but completely disconnecting social media from the press and government agencies.

  8. The Offaly Express published most of it in an article about the arrest at his house so I don’t think the press get a free pass here either, that was grossly unprofessional by both the district court judge and the newspaper.

  9. So people get prosecuted in the Ana Kriegel case for naming and shaming a murderous rapist.

But people destroying a man’s life with false allegations and endangering his safety are fine, what an absolute joke.

  10. The Indo coming out saying the suspect was Romanian was totally uncalled for and a deliberate dog whistle.

    Shameful stuff.

    RIP that young girl

  11. I’m still struggling to figure out, how, in less than 7 hours. The murder of a young woman in this country was turned Into a gender war….and people are just fine with it….

A family has lost their little girl and all people can think about is spamming “educated your boys” and “she was only going for a run” posts….

Doesn’t matter what she was doing. She shouldn’t be dead. And until we find out exactly why she is, people need to back the fuck off and let that family try and put the pieces of their lives back together.

Or at least puts steps in place so noone has to die like this again. Retweets won’t do that.

  12. I’m probably going to get ate for this. But Jesus this situation has gotten out of hand. At the end of the day a family has lost a daughter they have already come out and asked for privacy. We are all angry and shocked. But maybe this family doesn’t want their daughter to be the face of stopping violence against women not even 24 hours after her death. And then to have the outrage over #notallmen, the racism, this mans life being ruined over social media, the justice system and how responsible social media users should be. All valid discussions but it’s a discussion and a story and a debate for everyone else in the county. But for these people it’s their lives. In a few months when a new story is circulating and people are arguing over that, her family will still not have their daughter with them.

  13. She’s hardly dead two days and her shocking, senseless murder has already been hijacked by all these ancillary conversations and talking points.

  14. This will be tough on him and should teach us all to never pass judgment and just how dangerous so called vigilante justice is. Just being accused of a crime is extremely disconcerting but something this serious with a social media witch hunt could probably cause some one to easily have a mental breakdown.
And i find it annoying people making it a issue with men its plain bloody stupid who ever did this has some extremely serious issues and its probably a mental health issue and or drug abuse issue and would of probably attacked any person male or female so stop making it a gender issue for fuck sake yes there is sexism and misogyny but this is not it .

  15. If an armchair warrior gets beaten to death whilst jogging ill be the first one to say I’m surprised he was jogging.

  16. That poor girl but at e end of the day having a load of idiotic social media people accuse and harass the first person is outrageous. The man identified did have a previous issue but that means this guy is being unfairly doubly persecuted at this time.

  17. I read something an hour ago with an interview with the fella and his name was printed and it’s disappeared now. I believe it was the Offaly examiner. He does in fact have an assault charge hanging over him from early last year which he believes will be dropped. Will just have to see what happens with the new suspect in hospital.
