While three 2024 Republican presidential candidates qualified for tonight’s debate (Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, and Donald Trump), only the first two will be participating. The debate is being held in Des Moines, Iowa, and is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Eastern. This will be the last debate held before the 2024 Republican Iowa Caucus, which will be this coming Monday. Trump, for his part, will be participating in a simultaneously-broadcast Fox News town hall.

  4. It is frustrating to run for your party’s presidential nomination for a full year, make it to the final debate before the first votes, be one of only two people on the stage, and have no chance at the nomination. Frustrating, but not unprecedented.

    Except that tonight, for the first time ever, it’s somehow true of both people up there.

  10. With Christie dropping out, there is chance that Haley can beat Trump in NH.

    If that happens, we’ve got maybe a tad bit of an interesting story. Otherwise, it’s Trump.

    Of course, a lot of that rides on Haley not saying something as stupid as ignoring slavery or telling states they “always mess up”.

    The worst thing Republicans do is make me support Democrats because what I really wish I could do is support change within their party, it’s just too damn real and too damn risky to focus internally.
