Tricky balancing act for government – on the one hand, you need to acknowledge the effects of inflation on ordinary workers. On the other hand, you can’t get taken for a pre-2007 type ride and hope to have sustainable public finances.
I reckon they go back and forth, maybe even a little strike or two, and a deal done then well in advance of the election. Nobody will be happy and it will therefore be a good compromise.
