  1. Morocco can expect a letter from Michael D. for reperations shortly.

  2. Sssh you’re going to give landlords new ideas on getting rid of undesirable tenants.

  3. Apparently there was a better chance of being freed from slavery if you came from a Catholic country for there were collection boxes inside churches to raise ransoms. Not so much with predominantly Protestant countries. Other than that, if you were an experienced seaman you could adopt the Muslim faith and command one’s own ship.

It’s also thought to be a possible source for the Dutch character Zwarte Piet – as a cabin boy to one of these European captains who’d turned slaver in order to regain their freedom. It’s an interesting subject.

  4. I was familiar with the story, but it just threw me for an almighty loop to learn The Darkness of all people wrote a song about it?!?!

  5. The Vikings were stealing Irish folk for centuries before that.

  6. I read the book about it a few years ago, very interesting.

IIRC the town at the time was essentially made up of ‘pilgrims’ from the UK, who set out for a new home, following persecution in England. Similar to the pilgrims who ended up in the States, only they got as far as Baltimore and stayed
